At-Taubah 73–86

The command to be firm against the disbelievers and hypocrites, with an affirmation that even the Prophet Muhammad's request for forgiveness will not benefit them and their bodies will not be prayed over.

The hypocrites are fond of swearing by the name of Allah, uttering words containing disbelief, and abusing the Prophet Muhammad if they are not given zakat or spoils of war.
The story of Tsalabah bin Hatib is mentioned as an example of someone who promised to give zakat when he became wealthy, but then became stingy and withdrew from the Prophet after being given wealth.
They also criticize believers who give charity sincerely and those who can only contribute their efforts.
Their excuse for refusing to fight in jihad because of the hot season is answered by saying that the fire of Hellfire is far hotter.
The Prophet Muhammad is forbidden from taking them to fight, praying over their bodies, and standing at their graves.

Verses 73-79 explain two matters:

Allah commanded the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to fight the disbelievers and the hypocrites and deal with them harshly. Their place in the Hereafter is Hellfire. Allah conveyed this command to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after they committed various crimes against the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the believers, as explained from the beginning of Surah At-Taubah and the previous surahs.
Additional characteristics and qualities of the hypocrites already explained in the previous verses. Among them: They always swear by the name of Allah so that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will believe them Often utter words containing the meaning of disbelief Seek to obtain something that is not their right They abuse the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) if they are not given zakat or spoils of war. Allah threatens them with punishment in this world and the Hereafter. They will not be protected by Allah in this world and will not be helped They promise Allah that if given wealth they will give zakat and other obligations and will be righteous people. In reality, after being given wealth, they become stingy and withdraw from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and the believers as experienced by Tsa'labah Bin Hatib Al-Anshari. Such actions will perpetuate the quality of hypocrisy in their hearts until they die They like to lie and break promises because they do not believe that Allah knows their secrets and their whispers. Yet Allah is All-Knowing of the Unseen They like to criticize believers who give charity sincerely and the believers who can only contribute their efforts.

Verses 80-86 still explain the characteristics of the hypocrites and Allah's threat against them. Among them:

Even if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought forgiveness from Allah for them seventy times, Allah will not forgive them, because in reality they disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger.
They are pleased when the Prophet Muhammad does not invite them to fight in jihad, because they truly hate striving in the path of Allah. They make excuses because of the hot season. But the fire of Hellfire is far hotter. Later they will not be able to laugh much and will weep abundantly.
If there is an opportunity for them to join a group among those who are offered to fight, and they also ask to participate in fighting, Allah forbids the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from taking them to fight in jihad and wage war against the enemy ever, because they truly prefer to sit with those who do not participate in fighting.
Allah forbids the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Ummah from praying over their bodies and standing at their graves, because they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died in disobedience. Therefore, they are forbidden from being buried in the graveyards of the believers.
Do not be amazed by their wealth and children. All of that is merely a cause for Allah's punishment upon them.

When a verse is revealed commanding belief in Allah and struggling in jihad alongside the Prophet Muhammad, those among them who have the ability will ask for permission so that the Prophet Muhammad allows them to stay with those who do not participate in fighting.
