Yunus 1–14
The universe is made evidence: He who created the heavens, earth, sun, and moon is also He who revealed the Qur'an, so doubt about the revelation is unfounded.
Verse 1 begins with 3 letters from the Arabic alphabet (huruf al-hijā'), namely alif, lam, and ra. In the Qur'an there are 29 surahs that begin with a combination of several letters like this. No one knows their meaning except Allah alone. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never explained their meaning. Likewise, the Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to whom the Qur'an was first revealed never explained what they mean. Therefore, the majority of scholars do not dare interpret them. They only say: Allah alone knows their meaning.
At the beginning of Surah Yunus, Allah starts with an explanation that the content of the Qur'an is full of wisdom. Therefore there is no reason for mankind not to make it a guide for life in this world. Only by the guidance of the Qur'an and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) can mankind find safety in this world and the Hereafter.
Verses 1-6 present very strong and irrefutable arguments, particularly for those who are still doubtful and unable to accept the existence and truth of the Qur'an. Why do these disbelievers still doubt the Qur'an revealed to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) whose duty is to give warning to the disbelievers and bring glad tidings to the believers that they will obtain an honored position with Allah? Why do these disbelievers still accuse Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) of being a magician?
Why still doubt the truth of the Qur'an when it is revealed by Allah, the Creator of the heavens and earth in just 6 days, and then He established Himself on His Throne, and manages all the affairs of His creatures, and none can grant intercession except by His permission? Allah is also the Creator of mankind, so why not worship Him? Is all this not enough to be taken as a lesson?
Allah is also the place to which mankind will return in the Hereafter, and His promise is true. Allah will provide paradise for those who believe and do righteous deeds, and will provide Hellfire for those who disbelieve in Him and His messengers.
How Allah created the sun to shine, the moon to glow, and both to travel in their orbits, the succession of day and night, and various creations of Allah in the heavens and on earth are sufficient as proof of Allah's greatness. If all this is proof of Allah's greatness, then the truth of the Qur'an is a fact that can no longer be denied.
Verses 7 and 8 explain that the main factor that seals the hearts and minds of people so they cannot accept the truth of the Qur'an is not hoping to meet Allah in the Hereafter, being satisfied with worldly life, feeling secure with it, and being heedless of Allah's signs. The recompense for their deeds and attitude in the Hereafter is Hellfire.
Whereas verses 9 and 10 explain that those who believe and do righteous deeds will attain guidance (a guide to life) from Allah in this world and paradise in the Hereafter. Their supplication in paradise is 'Subhanakallahumma' (Glorified are You, O Allah), their greeting is 'Assalam' (peace), and the conclusion of their supplication is 'Alhamdu lillahi Rabbi'l 'Alamin' (All praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds).
Verse 11 explains that there are some people who call for hastening destruction upon their children and wealth when they are angry or in despair. If Allah were to grant this, they would surely be ruined; but out of mercy toward His servants, Allah does not grant it. Similarly, Allah leaves those who do not hope to meet Allah in the Hereafter to live in straying and confusion.
Verse 12 explains that among the characteristics of mankind is that when struck by harm or difficulty, they return and draw near to Allah. But after Allah relieves them from that harm or difficulty, they act as if they have no connection to Allah and return again to straying. Thus do the disobedient toward Allah find their evil and sins to be beautiful.
Verses 13 and 14 explain that the reason Allah destroyed previous nations is because of the associating of partners with Allah and the evil they committed. Then Allah replaced them with a new generation, and Allah always monitors what they do.
