Yunus 26–42

A depiction of the day when deities disassociate themselves from their worshippers, combined with a challenge to compose a surah like the Qur'an for those who doubt it.

• The believers enter paradise with radiant faces and are given the opportunity to see the face of Allah, a blessing described as greater than paradise and all it contains.
• On the Day of Gathering, the polytheists are separated from their deities, which then testify they never commanded themselves to be worshipped.
• The Provider of sustenance, hearing, sight, life, and death is Allah alone, so there is no reason to associate partners with Him.
• Their deities are unable to create anything or show the right path, unlike Allah who creates and gives guidance.
• The Prophet Muhammad is reminded that their rejection should not stop his work of preaching, for they hear without using their minds.

Verses 26-33 explain several key points:

1. Those who truly believe and perform righteous deeds to the best of their ability will be admitted by Allah into paradise in a state of honor with radiant faces. In paradise they will be given by Allah the opportunity to see His face. This is the greatest blessing of Allah for the believers who do righteous deeds, surpassing paradise and all it contains.
2. Those who disbelieve in Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) will be admitted by Allah into Hellfire in a state of humiliation and with darkened faces. They will remain in it eternally.
3. In the Hereafter, Allah will gather all mankind and jinn on the Day of Gathering. The disbelievers and polytheists will be placed in one location separate from the believers. Then Allah will separate between those who associate partners with Allah and the deities they worship. Then those deities will testify that they knew nothing of the deeds of the people who worshipped them and they never commanded them. Allah is sufficient as witness.
4. Allah will judge all matters concerning mankind with perfect justice. At that time, lies will be of no benefit.
5. There is no excuse to disbelieve or associate partners with Allah because He is the One who provides you with sustenance, sight, hearing, gives life, brings death, and manages all affairs. Allah alone is the True Lord. There is nothing right except Him; otherwise it is straying.
6. Rebellion against the truth of Allah, His Messenger, and the Qur'an is a factor that prevents faith. This is the decision and system of Allah applied to mankind.

Verses 34-36 invite the polytheists and disbelievers to think scientifically so they can distinguish between their deities and Allah. It is clear that their deities cannot create anything, whereas Allah is the Creator of everything from the beginning, then He repeats the creation in the same form. Likewise, their deities are not able in the least to show them the right path, whereas Allah has power to give guidance for their way of life. Which is more worthy of being followed? Their deities or Allah?

Verses 37-42 explain that the truth of the Qur'an comes from Allah. If the disbelievers do not believe, let them try to compose just one surah equal to it. Truly associating partners with Allah is a barrier that prevents their hearts from accepting the Qur'an.

Allah also warns Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) that the rejection of the disbelievers toward the Qur'an should not affect his work of preaching and spreading the Qur'an among society. The disbelievers are difficult to make understand even when they listen to the Qur'an because they do not use their minds well and to the fullest.
