Yunus 62–70

Two types of people are presented: the friends of Allah who are not overcome by fear and sadness, facing those who associate partners with Allah who practice their religion based only on inherited conjecture.

• The friends of Allah are characterized by true faith and piety, unafraid of the agony of death and the Day of Judgment.
• The mockery of others does not make them feel humiliated, because all honor belongs to Allah.
• The polytheists worship deities created by their ancestors without any basis in knowledge or guidance, merely following conjecture.
• Night for rest and the bright day are mentioned as signs of Allah's greatness that they do not perceive.
• The claim that Allah has a child is rejected as groundless, when everything in the heavens and earth belongs to Him.

Verses 62-70 explain two types of people in complete contrast to each other, 180 degrees different. The first are the awliyā' Allāh (the friends/companions of Allah) and the second are the mushrikūn (those who associate partners with Allah with anything and anyone).

The characteristics of the friends of Allah are as follows:

1. Believing in Allah and all pillars of faith
2. Having true piety toward Allah
3. No fear facing the horrors of death and the Day of Judgment
4. No sorrow regarding worldly matters
5. Receiving blessings in this life and success in the Hereafter (entering paradise)
6. Not feeling humiliated because of mockery or insults from the disbelievers, because honor belongs to Allah alone. For Allah is the Master of the heavens and earth and all that is in them.

The characteristics of the polytheists are as follows:

1. Worshipping and asking from other than Allah, namely idols created by their ancestors.
2. In following the tradition of worship or polytheism of their ancestors, they are guided only by mere conjecture; they have no basis whatsoever in knowledge and guidance from Allah. Yet Allah has made for mankind the night for rest and peace of soul (by sleeping at night) and the bright day. Yet they are unable to see these signs of Allah's greatness.
3. Among the polytheists are those who say Allah has a child as the People of the Scripture say, without any strong argument whatsoever. Glorified is Allah from their statement. How can Allah have a child when He is the Master of all that is in the heavens and earth? They only speak about Allah without a basis in knowledge.

Surely those who say anything about Allah without knowledge and guidance from Him, such as the polytheists and the People of the Scripture, will never receive blessings from Allah in this world and will not receive His mercy, which is paradise in the Hereafter, and they will be cast into Hellfire. The worldly pleasure they obtain is very insignificant compared to the severe punishment of the Hereafter.
