Day 140 · Surah Ibrahim Verses 19-33

Ibrahim 19–33

In the Hereafter the followers will blame the leaders who misguided them, and Satan will disown them, while the word of tawhid is likened to a tree with firm roots that always bears fruit, and the word of disbelief is like a tree easily uprooted.

• Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, has destroyed earlier nations and replaced them with new generations, and this is easy for Him.
• The weak protest against the leaders they once followed, but those leaders claim to be powerless and state that complaining or being patient now makes no difference.
• Satan disowns them and states that Allah's promise through the messengers was true while his own promise was false, and that they accepted it without compulsion, so it is not fitting for them to revile him.
• The word of tawhid is likened to a good tree whose roots are firm and whose branches reach high, bearing fruit at all times, while the word of disbelief is like a bad tree easily uprooted from the surface of the earth.
• The final part commands the believers to establish prayer and give charity before the coming of a day with no trade and no friendship, while mentioning rain, fruits, ships, the sun and the moon.

Verses 19 and 20 explain, so that we understand, that Allah is the Creator of the heavens and the earth. Allah has destroyed various earlier peoples and replaced them with new generations, as happened to the peoples before the Prophet ﷺ. This is easy for Allah.

Verse 21 explains that in the Hereafter the oppressed will protest against the arrogant ones (the rulers) who oppressed them, saying: In the past, when we were in the world, we were your followers. Can you relieve us of Allah's punishment even a little? The arrogant ones will evade the question and blame Allah for not guiding them. Had Allah given them guidance, they would surely have given it to others too. They admit that complaining or being patient at that time makes no difference, for there is no longer any way out.

Verse 22 also explains that Satan will disown those he misguided when Allah decides that they are the inhabitants of Hell. Satan will say: Indeed Allah, through His messengers, promised you a true promise. I too made promises. You accepted my promises without compulsion. Therefore, do not revile me, but revile yourselves. Now we can no longer help one another.

Verse 23 explains that those who believe and do righteous deeds will enter Paradise and attain honour and safety.

Verse 24 explains the parable of the good word, namely the declaration of faith (لا اله الا الله), which is like a good tree; its roots are firm and its branches reach high into the sky.

Verse 25 continues from the previous verse, that the good tree will produce fruit at all times by Allah's leave. Likewise, a believer who fulfils the consequences of the declaration of faith will live firmly and produce many righteous deeds at all times.

Verses 26 and 27 explain the parable of the word of disbelief with a bad tree that has no strong roots and is easily uprooted. Allah keeps the believers firm with the declaration of faith (لا اله الا الله) in this world and the Hereafter, and lets the disbelievers go astray because of their disbelief and idolatry.

Verses 28-30 explain that Allah commands us to examine those who exchange Islam for disbelief and lead people towards ruin. Their dwelling place will be Hell, because they set up other gods as rivals to Allah in order to lead people astray from His path. They are given only a little enjoyment of this world, and in the Hereafter they will be cast into Hell.

Verses 31-33 explain that Allah calls upon His believing servants to establish prayer and spend part of their sustenance before the coming of the Day of Judgement, on which day there will no longer be any trade or friendship. For it is He who created the heavens and the earth, sends down rain from the sky, and with that water brings forth fruits as sustenance for us. He makes it easy for ships to sail upon the sea and also upon the rivers. He also makes the sun and the moon revolve, and the night and day alternate, for the good and benefit of mankind.
