Day 144 · Surah Al-Hijr Verses 71-99

Al-Hijr 71–99

The land of the people of Lut is overturned with hot stones, followed by the destruction of the inhabitants of Aikah and Al-Hijr, then the Messenger is commanded to be forgiving and increase in prostration facing the mockery of his people.

• The inhabitants of that city forcefully pursued their desires like drunken people, until they were struck by a loud sound at sunrise, their land was overturned, and hot stones rained upon them.
• The inhabitants of Aikah, the people of Prophet Shuaib, and the inhabitants of Al-Hijr who were advanced in construction experienced the same fate because they rejected Allah and His Messenger.
• The heavens and earth were created with justice and the Hour will certainly come, while the Messenger is commanded to be forgiving and humble toward the believers.
• The Qur'an is said to be far more valuable than the worldly enjoyments gained by the disbelievers, and warning is given against the danger of believing in part of the revelation and rejecting the rest.
• The Messenger is asked to turn away from those who mock his preaching, increase in glorification and prostration, with the assurance that Allah will protect him from the polytheists.

Verses 71-77 continue the previous story of the people of Sodom forcing sodomy with Lut's guests. They were like drunk people not caring about sin and shame to Lut. At sunrise they were struck by lightning. Then Allah overturned their land and sent hot stones. For believers close to Allah and hoping to return to Him, this event is sufficient proof of Allah's power.

Verses 78-84 explain that Allah also destroyed the inhabitants of Aikah (the land of Shuaib's people) and the inhabitants of Al-Hijr (Thamud) who were very advanced in construction. Because they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, they suffered the same fate as Lut's people.

Verses 85-90 explain that Allah created the heavens and earth with justice and the Hour will certainly come. The Messenger should be forgiving and humble toward the believers. The Qur'an is far greater than the worldly enjoyment gained by the disbelievers. The Messenger gives warning about the danger of the behavior of the People of the Book who believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in another part.

Verses 91-99 of Surah Al-Hijr explain that Allah will hold accountable those who reject part of the Qur'an's verses and accept another part. The Messenger is commanded to avoid those who mock his preaching while in Makkah, increase in glorification and prostration. Allah will protect him from the polytheists.
