Al-Qasas 51–70

Guidance is entirely in Allah's hand, worldly wealth is only temporary adornment, and in the Hereafter deities besides Allah actually disown their worshippers.

• The People of the Book who are steadfast in their scripture easily accept the Qur'an and are given a double reward because of their patience.
• The authority of guidance belongs to Allah; the Messenger was admonished when trying hard to make his uncle accept Islam on the eve of death.
• The Quraysh rejected belief for fear of expulsion and losing security, yet disbelief is what destroys the land.
• Whatever wealth is no more than an adornment of this life, while the reward with Allah is far better and eternal.
• In the Hereafter those worshipped disown their followers, while Allah affirms only He deserves to be worshipped.

Verses 51-59 explain three things:

1. Allah linked the disobedient Quraysh to Bani Israel who disobeyed and all the punishments Allah sent upon them so it might be a lesson. Therefore, the People of the Book who are steadfast with the Torah and Gospel will easily accept the truth of the Qur'an because the signs of the Messenger are mentioned in it. When the verses of Allah are recited to them, they immediately believe. Allah gave them a double reward because of their patience. They rejected evil with good, spent from their wealth, and kept themselves away from useless things.
2. The authority of guidance is in Allah's hand. He did not give it even to Muhammad, as happened when Abu Talib died. The Messenger tried to make his uncle recite the two shahadas. Allah admonished him with this verse.
3. One reason the disbelieving Quraysh did not believe in the Messenger was their fear of facing threats and expulsion by their leaders and not gaining security. Yet disbelief in Allah and His Messenger is the cause of destruction and loss of security as Allah inflicted on the nations before them. A land will not be destroyed before Allah sends a messenger who conveys His revelation and its people reject it.

Verses 60-67 explain several things:

1. Whatever forms of wealth obtained, is no more than an adornment of the life of this world. The reward with Allah is far better and eternal. Why do we not understand this also?
2. There is a great difference between the believers whom Allah promised Paradise and the disbelievers and polytheists to whom Allah gave only the adornment of worldly life.
3. In the Hereafter, Allah will ask the disbelievers and polytheists: Where are the gods you worshipped in this world? Suddenly the devils and their companions from among humans said: O Allah, these are our victims. They strayed as we strayed. Today we disown them. They did not really worship us. By then Hell is before their eyes. They regret greatly and wish that had they received guidance in this world. As for those who believed in Allah, His Messenger, and the Qur'an and did many good deeds, they are calm because they are confident they will succeed in entering Paradise and be saved from the fire of Hell.

Verses 68-70 explain Allah creates and determines what He wills. Mankind does not have the ability to determine what is right and what is wrong. Allah is free from the gods they made partners with Him. He knows all the secrets of human hearts and what they display. He is Allah. There is no god worthy of worship besides Allah. To Him belongs all praise in this world and the Hereafter. To Him belongs all judgment and to Him mankind will be returned.
