Fatir 12–30

Two seas, one fresh and one salty, fruits of various colors, and mountains with white, red, and black streaks are made as proof that truly those who fear Allah are the learned.

• From two seas of different tastes, mankind obtains fresh fish and pearls, and a path for ships to seek Allah's favor.
• Deities other than Allah possess no power whatsoever, and in the Hereafter their worshippers will actually deny that association with partners.
• Each soul bears its own burden and it cannot be transferred to anyone else, not even to close relatives.
• The believer and the disbeliever are likened to the one who sees and the one who is blind, darkness and light, shade and heat, life and death.
• Trade with Allah is never a loss for those who recite the Qur'an, establish prayer, and spend regularly.

Verses 12-18 explain three important matters:

1. Continuing from the previous verse concerning Allah's power and greatness. Two seas of different qualities, one whose water is fresh and good to drink and the other salty. From both, Allah has provided sustenance for mankind in the form of various kinds of fresh fish and pearls that mankind wears. Ships that sail upon them so as to seek His favor. May mankind be grateful to Allah. It is also Allah who makes the night and day succeed each other, holding the sun and moon in place. Each runs until the term appointed by Him. All of this is Allah who created it.
2. Allah invites mankind to reflect upon the signs of His power and greatness, then upon the gods worshipped besides Him. His power and greatness are very clear and awesome, whereas the gods whom people claim have no power or strength of even an atom. Therefore, the one who does not understand Allah's power and greatness finds it difficult to listen to the truth of the Qur'an and Islam, let alone believe in and practice it. Yet in the Hereafter they will deny that association. Allah is Most Subtle in His awareness of mankind. Truly mankind is in great need of Allah. Allah is able to eliminate them and replace them with a new generation. All of this is easy for Allah.
3. Allah has decreed that each person bears their own sin and it cannot be transferred to anyone else even if they are close relatives. Those who can understand the warning of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are those who fear Allah and establish prayer.

Verses 19-30 explain three important matters:

1. The parable of the one who disbelieves in Allah, the Messenger, and the Qur'an compared to the one who believes is like the blind compared to the seeing, darkness compared to light, shade compared to heat, and death compared to life. It is Allah who gives guidance; the task of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is only to bring good tidings and warnings. Every community has a messenger whom Allah sent. Allah inflicts punishment upon every community that disbelieves in Him.
2. Among the proofs of Allah's power and greatness are sending water from the sky, then bringing forth from the earth fruits of various colors and mountains with streaks of white, red, and deep black. Likewise mankind and cattle that are of various colors. Truly those who fear Allah are the believers who know of Allah's greatness in the universe.
3. Truly trade with Allah is never a loss. The condition is, recite the Qur'an, establish prayer, and spend regularly. Allah will surely perfect its reward and increase His favor to those who do it.
