Yasin 1–27
The story of the people of Antioch who rejected three messengers, then a man from the edge of the city defended them and was stoned to death before being admitted to Paradise.
Verse 1 of Surah Yasin consists of two Arabic letters, ya and sin. In the Qur'an there are 29 surahs that begin with combinations of such letters. No one knows their meaning except Allah alone. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) never explained their meaning. Likewise, the Companions of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to whom the Qur'an was first revealed never explained what they meant. For this reason, the majority of scholars do not dare to interpret them. They only say: Allah alone knows their meaning.
Verses 2-12 explain that the Qur'an is mighty and there is no falsehood in it. Muhammad is among Allah's Messengers, on a straight path. The Qur'an was revealed from the Almighty, the All-Wise, so that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) may warn the Arabs and non-Arabs with it. Allah knows well that most people will not believe in the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Qur'an.
In Hell, the disbelievers will have their necks collared and their hands bound to their chins so they are forced to look upward. Before and behind them a barrier will be placed, then their faces will be covered so they cannot see. The punishment is given because they refused to believe. Those who wish to believe are those who fear Allah the Most Merciful even though they cannot perceive Him (the unseen). They are the ones who will have Paradise. Allah revives the dead and records all deeds and gathers them in a special register.
Verses 13-27 explain that the level of disbelief of the polytheists of Mecca is the same as the people of Antioch in Turkey. Allah sent three Messengers to them, all of them they rejected, because the Messengers were ordinary people and they accused them of being liars. The people of Antioch believed that the Messengers brought misfortune, then they committed excessive acts against the Messengers.
Suddenly a man appeared from the edge of the city urging them to follow the Messengers who asked no payment. Why do you not worship Allah who created you and to Him you will all be returned? Is it fitting for you to worship gods besides Allah? If Allah wills misfortune, nothing can help or save you. Why do you remain in misguidance? Truly I believe in your Lord. Listen. Suddenly they pelted him with stones until he died. Allah said to him: Enter Paradise. He said: Oh, if only my people knew of the forgiveness and honor Allah has given me.
