Az-Zumar 57–67

The wishes of the disbelievers to be returned to the world are described as futile, then it is emphasized that associating partners with Allah nullifies all deeds, even for the messengers.

• When facing punishment, they wish they had been guided or returned to the world to obey, yet they previously rejected the Qur'an with arrogance.
• Their faces will be blackened on the Day of Judgment and their place in Hellfire will be due to their arrogance toward Allah, His Messenger, and the revelation.
• By contrast, the God-conscious will be saved from the fire and enter Paradise without experiencing any evil or sadness.
• The people of Jahiliyyah invited the Messenger to worship idols, yet it had been revealed to him and the messengers before him that idolatry nullifies all deeds.
• They did not honor Allah as He deserves to be honored, yet on the Day of Judgment the earth will be in His grasp and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand.

Verses 57-67 explain several matters:

1. Continuing from the previous verses regarding the disbelievers and those who associate partners with Allah when facing Allah's punishment. They say: 'If Allah had guided me, I would have been among the God-conscious.' Or when they see the punishment of Hellfire, they say: 'If only I were returned to the world, I would obey Allah and His Messenger.' Regret then will be of no benefit because during their time in the world they rejected the Qur'an, acted with arrogance, and disbelieved in it.
2. On the Day of Judgment the faces of the disbelievers will be darkened before Allah. Their place is Hellfire because of their arrogance toward Allah, His Messenger, and the Qur'an.
3. By contrast, Allah saves the God-conscious from the fire and grants them success in entering Paradise. Therein they will experience neither evil nor grief.
4. Allah is the Creator of all things and the Maintainer of His creation, possessing the keys of the heavens and the earth. Those who reject the Qur'an will surely lose.
5. The people of Jahiliyyah tried to invite the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) to worship idols. Yet Allah revealed to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and to the messengers before him that if he associates partners with Allah, all his deeds will be nullified and he will surely be among the losers.
6. Therefore, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded to worship only Allah and to be grateful to Him.
7. The disbelievers and those who associate partners with Allah did not honor Allah with the honor due to Him. Yet on the Day of Judgment the earth will be in His grasp and the heavens will be rolled up in His right hand. Glorified and Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him.
