Day 265 · Surah Al-Mukmin Verses 34-40

Gafir 34–40

The believing man from Pharaoh's family reminds his people of their past attitude toward Yusuf, opposes Pharaoh's command to build a towering palace, and urges them to prioritize the Hereafter.

• He reminds them that Yusuf too came with clear signs yet they doubted him, and after his death they thought Allah would not send another messenger.
• Those who dispute the revelation without knowledge are described as arrogant and despotic, thus Allah seals their hearts.
• Pharaoh commands Haman to build a lofty palace so he might see the Lord of Musa—an arrogant and impossible statement meant to mock Musa before his people.
• Pharaoh's evil deeds cause his perspective to become inverted, so he reverses the facts and accuses Musa of being a liar.
• He calls his people to the right path, emphasizing that the world is only temporary enjoyment, and mentions that the righteous deeds of the believers are rewarded with Paradise and endless provision.

Verses 34-40 continue the story of the believing man from Pharaoh's family. He explains: 'Before Musa came Yusuf with various clear signs from Allah. Yet you doubted his prophethood. After he died, you supposed that Allah would not send another Messenger to you. Those who deny the truth of the revelation that comes from Allah and doubt it—Allah does not guide them. Allah is very angry, and so are the believers, with those who dispute Allah's revelation without sound knowledge. They are arrogant and transgressive, killing or oppressing people. Allah seals the hearts of the arrogant and tyrannical.'

While mocking Musa and displaying his arrogance, Pharaoh said to Haman, his minister: 'Build me a palace so I might see the God of Musa.' This is indeed an arrogant statement with the intention of mocking Musa before his people. It also displays his ignorance, for it is impossible for Haman to build a palace reaching the sky. It is even more impossible for him to wish to see Allah. Thus Pharaoh deceived his people by reversing facts and saying: 'I am sure Musa is a liar.' Pharaoh's evil conduct caused his perspective to become distorted and blocked from the straight view.

The believer boldly said: 'O my people, follow me; I will guide you to the path of righteousness. Do not listen to the lies of Pharaoh. Remember, the life of this world is only temporary enjoyment. Indeed, the Hereafter is the eternal home. Whoever does evil will be recompensed with its equivalent. But whoever does righteous deeds, whether male or female, while believing in Allah and not associating anything with Him, such will enter Paradise and therein will be given sustenance beyond measure.'
