Fussilat 47–54

The time of the Day of Judgment is known only to Allah, humans are described as never tiring of asking yet despairing when difficulty comes and becoming arrogant when given wealth, and the signs of Allah's greatness will be shown in the universe and within themselves.

• Nothing escapes Allah's knowledge, from fruit emerging from its sheath to pregnancy and birth, and on the Day of Judgment the idols will disown those who worshipped them.
• Humans never tire of asking for wealth and health, despair when struck by hardship, then feel worthy and arrogant when given riches.
• Worldly blessings can make humans deny the Day of Judgment while hoping to receive good from Allah if the Day of Judgment is true.
• The arrogant turn away from the Qur'an but pray much when hardship comes, yet rejecting it as a way of life is a far greater deviation.
• Allah will show the signs of His greatness in the universe and within people themselves so it becomes clear the Qur'an is true.

Verses 47-54 explain four matters:

1. Only Allah knows when the Day of Judgment will occur. Nothing escapes Allah's knowledge: fruit emerges from its sheath, women bear children and give birth. On the Day of Judgment the idols will disown the polytheists and even disappear. At that time they will know that they cannot escape Allah's punishment.
2. Humans never tire of asking for wealth, health, and such. When struck by hardship, they despair. When given wealth after a period of hardship, they become arrogant and feel they deserve it.
3. Wealth and the pleasures of this world can cause humans to disbelieve in the Day of Judgment. If the Day of Judgment occurs, they believe they will receive good from Allah. This is the hope they build within themselves. Allah will tell them everything they did on that Day of Judgment, and for them is severe punishment.
4. The Qur'an is a great blessing from Allah upon mankind. The arrogant turn away from it. But when faced with hardship, they pray much to Allah. Rejecting the Qur'an as a system of life is an error and deviation far greater. Allah will show them the signs of His greatness in the universe and within themselves so it becomes clear to them the Qur'an is true. Sufficient is Allah as a Witness. Indeed the disbelievers doubt the Day of Judgment. Allah is All-Knowing of all things.
