Asy-Syura 32–44

Ships sailing by wind are made proof of Allah's greatness, then detailed are the characteristics of believers oriented to the Hereafter, including consultation and repaying injustice with equivalent recompense.

• Large ships can sail because of wind, and if the wind is held the ship stops, a sign understood only by the patient and grateful.
• Giving in this world is only temporary pleasure, while believers who rely on Allah are oriented toward the Hereafter.
• Their characteristics are called: avoiding major sins and fornication, establishing prayer, practicing consultation, and spending part of their wealth.
• Defending oneself when wronged is permissible with equivalent repayment, but forgiving is more noble and has greater reward.
• The wrongdoer is the one who commits injustice, and the disbelievers will later ask to be returned to the world when they witness the punishment of Hellfire.

Verses 32-44 explain the following:

1. Among the signs of Allah's greatness are large sailing ships that sail on the sea through wind. If Allah holds back the wind, the ships stop. Those patient and grateful understand it as a sign of Allah's greatness. Allah can destroy the ships because of sins, yet Allah pardons many of mankind's errors. He knows those who dispute His verses. They will not find an escape from Allah's punishment.
2. Whatever is given in this world is worldly enjoyment alone. The believers who trust in Allah are oriented toward the Hereafter. Their characteristics are:

• Avoiding major sins and fornication.
• Fulfilling all of Allah's commands and abandoning all His prohibitions.
• Establishing prayer.
• Implementing the consultation system.
• Spending part of their wealth.
• Those wronged have the right to defend themselves and retaliate equally. Yet forgiving is more noble and greater in reward with Allah.
• The one who defends himself from injustice that he faces is right. The wrong one is he who commits injustice against people and violates Allah's law on earth. For them is the punishment of Hellfire.
• Whoever Allah leaves astray will have no helper. You will see the disbelievers when they see the punishment of Hellfire, they ask to be returned to the world.
