Muhammad 20–29
The character of hypocrites is exposed: their faces become pale when fighting is made obligatory, their hearts are sealed from understanding the Qur'an, and their death is described as tragic.
Verses 20-29 explain some characteristics of the hypocrites, namely those in whose hearts are various diseases such as doubt about the promise of Allah and His Messenger, and how their fate is when facing death and why Allah curses them.
Among the characteristics of the hypocrites is that when the verse making fighting in the way of Allah obligatory was revealed, they looked with scorn at the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Their faces became deathly pale as if facing the throes of death. If they obeyed Allah's command and spoke good words, surely the good would return to them. But actually they have no strong resolve, no honesty, and harbor ill intentions. If they had power, they would certainly cause corruption on earth and sever the bonds of kinship.
Allah curses the hypocrites, making their ears deaf and their eyes blind and they cannot reflect upon the Qur'an because their hearts are sealed. Those who abandon the teachings of the Qur'an after its truth became clear to them, Satan seizes them and prolongs their vain desires. They obey the Jews who hate the Qur'an. Yet Allah is All-Knowing of their secrets.
They will face a tragic death. When the angel of death takes their souls, the angels will strike their faces and their backs. This is because they did what displeases Allah and hated what He approved. So Allah erases all their good deeds.
The hypocrites think Allah will not expose the malice and evil intentions hidden in their hearts, so they feel free to act as they please.
