Az-Zariyat 1–30

A series of oaths affirm that the promise and the Day of Judgment are true, then mentioned are the characteristics of the God-conscious inhabitants of Paradise and the story of the angels who visited Ibrahim.

• Oaths by the wind, clouds, ships, and angels are used to affirm that what has been promised to mankind and the Day of Judgment are certainly true.
• The polytheists are depicted as having differing statements, easily turned away from the truth, drowning in heedlessness, and challenging the coming of the Day of Judgment.
• The characteristics of the God-conscious include much night prayer, seeking forgiveness at dawn, and setting aside part of their wealth for the poor and needy.
• They also make the signs on the earth and within themselves as an increase in certainty, and they believe that sustenance has been decreed in the heavens.
• The story of the angels who visited Ibrahim leaves a lesson that he was very honorable to guests even though he did not know them well.

Verses 1-6 of Surah Ad-Dhariyat explain that Allah swears by the wind, clouds, ships and angels that what has been promised to mankind is certainly true, as is the Day of Judgment.

Verses 7-14 explain that Allah swears by the heaven possessing beauty that the polytheists have differing statements, easily turned away from the truth, cursed are those who lie, drowning in ignorance and heedlessness, and challenging the Day of Judgment. They will know when they are tormented in the fire of Hell as recompense for their challenge.

Verses 16-23 explain Paradise for those who are God-conscious. Among its criteria are obedience to Allah and His Messenger, much night prayer, seeking forgiveness at dawn, spending part of their wealth for the poor and needy, the earth and themselves increasing certainty in Allah, and believing that sustenance has been decreed by Allah in the heavens.

Verses 24-30 recount the story of the angels who visited Ibrahim as explained in Surah Al-Hijr verses 51-77.

In verses 25-27 there is another lesson that Ibrahim was a person who greatly honored guests even though he did not know them well.
