At-Talaq 1–12

The rules of divorce are detailed starting from the time of valid divorce, the waiting period, the wife's right to housing and maintenance, to warnings through cities that were destroyed for disobeying Allah's law.

A valid divorce is issued when the wife is in a state of purity and has not been intimate after menstruation, then followed by a waiting period whose wisdom opens an opportunity for husband and wife to realize and refrain from divorce.
During the waiting period the wife remains entitled to stay in the husband's house and is his responsibility, unless she commits adultery with clear witnesses.
After the waiting period is over, the husband may reconcile or release her with kindness witnessed by two just men; a settlement based on God-consciousness is promised a way out and provision from an unexpected source.
A waiting period of three months for those who have or have not menstruated, and until delivery for those who are pregnant, with maintenance and the cost of nursing according to ability.
Many people of a city who disobeyed Allah's law were destroyed and Hell was prepared, so the Qur'an was revealed so that mankind might come out of darkness into the light of Islam.

Verses 1-5 of Surah Ath-Thalaq explain the laws of Allah related to household:

If divorce occurs, then there must be a waiting period ('iddah) as explained in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 228. Whereas valid divorce (talaq) occurs when the wife is in a state of purity and has not been intimate after menstruation has ended.
During the 'iddah period, the wife still has the right to stay in the husband's house because she is still his responsibility until the 'iddah ends. Unless the wife commits adultery with clear witnesses. The wisdom of there being an 'iddah period is because Allah might give awareness to the husband and wife so they do not divorce. This is the law of Allah that must be obeyed.
If the 'iddah period ends, then he may marry her again or release her with kindness witnessed by two just male witnesses. This is the teaching of Allah for the believers.
If the resolution of a household matter is based on God-consciousness toward Allah, then Allah will show a good way out and provide provision from an unexpected way. Allah will make sufficient the living of the one who relies on Him. Allah executes His will and decree upon His servants.
The wife who no longer menstruates, if still in doubt, then her 'iddah is 3 months. Similarly, the wife who has not yet menstruated. The wife who is pregnant, her 'iddah is until she gives birth.
Whoever resolves his matter based on God-consciousness toward Allah, then Allah will ease his affairs, erase his faults and increase his reward. Therefore, divorce is the final solution. Every problem that occurs in the household must be weighed and resolved on the basis of consciousness of Allah so that we can receive His guidance.

Verses 6-7 continue the previous verse, namely Allah's laws related to household. The husband is obligated to provide housing for the divorced wife until her 'iddah is complete and should not make it difficult for her. If the wife is pregnant, then give her maintenance until she gives birth. After giving birth, give her payment for nursing and resolve the matter by consultation. If no agreement can be reached, then another woman may nurse. This maintenance is according to ability. Allah does not burden a soul except according to its ability. May Allah grant ease after hardship.

Verses 8-12 explain that many people of cities that disobeyed the laws of Allah and His messengers have been destroyed by Allah so they experience the consequences of that disobedience. They all lost. Allah has prepared Hell for them in the Hereafter. The believers should make their history a lesson so they do not meet the same fate. Allah has revealed the Qur'an in which there are many lessons for mankind. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) has recited its verses clearly, so we come out from the darkness of ignorance to the light of Islam and enter the Garden. In this world Allah has created 7 heavens and 7 earths. Allah sends down His commands through His angels from the sky to the earth; among them is the angel Gabriel who brings revelation, so mankind recognizes that Allah is All-Mighty over all things and His knowledge encompasses all things.
