'Abasa 1–42

The Messenger is rebuked for neglecting a blind man in order to approach the Quraishi leaders, then mankind is questioned about his disbelief in the midst of food that grows from rain.

• The Messenger is rebuked for neglecting Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum who was blind while approaching the Quraishi leaders.
• That incident became a lesson for preachers not to prioritize the rich and powerful above the poor and weak, for no one knows who will receive guidance.
• Mankind is questioned about his disbelief, yet he was created from a drop of sperm, his life is limited, he dies, then is resurrected whenever He wills.
• Rain that falls grows grain, grapes, vegetables, olives, dates, lush gardens, and fruits for their livelihood.
• When the Day of Judgment occurs a person flees from his brother, mother, father, wife, and children because he is preoccupied with his own affairs; so some faces will be bright and joyful while others will be covered with dust and utterly dark.

Verses 1-16 of Surah 'Abasa explain that Allah rebuked the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) for neglecting Abdullah Ibn Umm Maktum who was blind because he was approaching the Quraishi leaders. This is a valuable lesson for those who preach not to prioritize the rich and powerful over the poor and weak, because no one knows who will receive guidance.

Verses 17-32 explain: why do people disbelieve in Allah? Did He not create them from a drop of sperm, limit their lifespan, cause them to die and then resurrect them when He wills? Food from rain that falls to earth then grows grain, grapes, vegetables, olives, dates, lush gardens and fruits. All of this is for their livelihood.

Verses 33-42 explain that when the Day of Judgment occurs a person will flee from his brother, mother, father, wife and children. Each person is preoccupied with his own affairs. On that Day some faces will be bright and radiant, laughing and joyful. And some will be covered with dust and utterly dark. They are the disbelievers and sinners.
