Ali 'Imran 166–180
The defeat at Uhud occurred because some troops violated the order to guard the hill, and today it is affirmed that those who fall in the way of Allah are truly alive, while those who make many excuses reveal their hypocrisy.
Verses 166-173 continue the previous verse regarding war and defeat. The defeat of the believers during the Battle of Uhud was also by Allah's permission because some of them violated the Messenger's order to guard the peak of Mount Uhud. Warfare is a test to clearly know who is a believer and who is a hypocrite. Those who have many excuses not to participate in fighting are a sign of hypocrisy. They are closer to disbelief than faith. Actually, they fear death. In fact, they cannot escape death either.
Those who die fighting in the way of Allah are in reality alive and receive various forms of sustenance from Allah. They rejoice at receiving Allah's blessings and are gladdened by those who will follow them. There is no fear or sorrow in their hearts.
They are those who responded to Allah's call with sincere hearts and strong conviction, though they were previously wounded and defeated. Even if all mankind gathered to fight against them, they would not fear at all, indeed their faith in Allah becomes even stronger as they say, 'Allah is sufficient for us, He is the best of Protectors.'
Verse 174 continues the previous verse regarding the attitude of believers who respond to the call of Allah with full conviction. Some returned from the war carrying reward and spoils and were not wounded at all. They seek the pleasure of Allah. Allah possesses immense grace.
Verses 175-187 explain that Satan frightens those with weak faith and his followers. True believers are not affected by Satan's temptation and fear only Allah. Therefore, do not grieve over how quickly people accept disbelief. They will not be able to destroy Islam. Allah punishes them in the Hereafter because of that disbelief. Likewise, those who trade faith for disbelief, their fate is the same, in this world or the Hereafter. The respite Allah gives to the disbelievers is not good for them. But it only adds to their sins and for them remains a humiliating punishment.
Allah will surely test the faith of the believers so that the quality of their faith becomes known. Allah alone raises and chooses messengers from whom He wills. If we believe in Allah, His messengers, and have God-consciousness, then Allah promises a great reward. Miserliness is of no good, and its recompense is very severe on the Day of Judgement.
