An-Nisa' 128–140
Reconciliation is prioritized when the household is troubled and divorce is only the last resort that remains grounded in God-consciousness, then fairness is commanded even toward oneself and one's own family.
- Household conflicts are resolved through reconciliation first, and their management is built upon the foundation of doing good and God-consciousness toward Allah.
- A husband cannot possibly be fair in matters of the heart, but he is forbidden from leaning too much toward one wife while leaving another in suspense.
- If reconciliation fails, divorce may be pursued as long as it remains grounded in God-consciousness toward Allah.
- Believers are commanded to be fair even toward themselves and their closest relatives, not to follow base desires, and not to distort the truth.
- Sitting together with those who reject and mock the Qur'an is forbidden, for one who does so will be considered like them.
Verses 128-134 continue the laws and management of household affairs. Among them:
- If family conflict occurs due to concern about the wife committing adultery or turning away, then reconciliation is immediately pursued so the household can be restored.
- Always build household management based on ihsan (excellence) and God-consciousness toward Allah.
- It is impossible for a husband to be fair to his wives in matters of the heart, because the heart is moved by Allah. Therefore, do not lean too much toward one and leave the other in suspense.
- If attempts at reconciliation fail, then divorce may be undertaken as long as it is grounded in God-consciousness toward Allah.
Founded on the fact that all the heavens and earth belong to Allah, then obeying the system and laws of household affairs created by Allah that are built upon the foundation of God-consciousness toward Him is the best solution for humanity, especially Muslims throughout all times. For those who practice it, it will bear reward and good in this world and the Hereafter.
Verses 135-140 command believers to do several things and at the same time must leave off several things, such as:
- Act justly even toward oneself and one's closest family.
- Do not follow base desires.
- Do not distort the truth or turn away from it.
- Firm your faith in Allah, His Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Qur'an, and the Books revealed before.
- Never disbelieve in Allah, His angels, His Books, His Messengers, and the Last Day, for that will cause great misguidance.
- The person who believes then disbelieves, then believes and then disbelieves again, and then increases in disbelief will not receive forgiveness from Allah or guidance to the straight path from Allah.
- Allah forbids Muslims from taking disbelievers as helpers and leaders, for they will not attain honor. Honor belongs only to Allah. Yet they deny the Qur'an and mock it.
- Allah forbids Muslims from sitting and being intimate friends with those who reject the Qur'an and mock it. If we do so, then Allah will consider us like them.
- Beware of disbelief and hypocrisy, for the disbelievers and hypocrites will all be gathered by Allah in hellfire.
