Day 58 · Surah Al-Maidah Verses 14-23

Al-Ma'idah 14–23

Refutation of the belief that Allah unites with Isa, rebuttal of the claims of Jews and Christians as children of Allah, and the refusal of Bani Israel to enter the holy land due to fear of its inhabitants.

Some of the People of the Book claim to be bound by a covenant yet violate it, so Allah plants enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Judgment.
The Prophet Muhammad was sent to explain the contents of the Torah and Injil that have been concealed, and the Qur'an becomes a light that takes people out of darkness to the straight path.
Claiming that Allah is Isa, son of Maryam, is called disbelief, for it is impossible for the Creator to unite with creation and Isa himself was powerless to prevent hardship or death.
The claims of Jews and Christians to be the children and loved ones of Allah are answered with the question why they are punished for sins, for they are merely ordinary people.
Musa reminded his people of Allah's blessings, but they refused to enter the holy land because its inhabitants were mighty, except for two believers who urged them to advance and trust in Allah.

Verses 14-17 again highlight various behaviors of the People of the Book. Among them are those who say that we are Christians. We acknowledge that a covenant was taken from them by Allah and His Messenger, yet they still do not heed the prohibitions of Allah and their Messenger. As a result, Allah plants enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Judgment. On that day, Allah will reveal all their deeds.

Allah calls the People of the Book while explaining that Muhammad is His Messenger and has come among them. Among his missions is to explain many things from the contents of the Torah and Injil that have been concealed by their scholars. The Qur'an is also revealed by Allah for the People of the Book functioning as a light that illuminates their lives and a Book that explains the system of life.

Therefore, Allah will only give guidance through the Qur'an to those who seek His pleasure and the path of salvation (Islam). Thus Allah will bring them out from various darknesses of ignorance to His light or the light of Islam and guide them to the straight path (Islam).

Allah is greatly angered and considers as disbeliever one who says that Allah is Isa, son of Maryam, or unites with Isa, son of Maryam. This is the understanding of absolute union which Allah greatly dislikes. He who believes it is a disbeliever. For it is impossible for Allah as Creator to unite with His creation. How could that ever happen? If Isa were united with Allah, why did he experience many difficulties in his preaching, and likewise his mother Maryam?

Allah commands the Messenger to tell the Christians: Who indeed could prevent Allah's will if He desires to harm or kill Isa, his mother Maryam, and all people on earth? If Isa were god or Allah, why could he not escape death and various difficulties? For among the attributes of the True God is that He cannot be harmed or destroyed by anyone or anything. Remember, Allah is the Master of the universe. He creates whatever He wills and He is All-Powerful over all things.

Verses 18-23 still explain several matters related to the People of the Book:

The Jews and Christians claim that they are the children of Allah and His loved ones. Then Allah answers: If that were true, why are you punished for your sins? You are nothing but ordinary people like other people. Allah will forgive or punish whom He wills. The earth and heavens belong to Him and to Him you will all be returned.
The Prophet Muhammad was sent by Allah to be His Messenger to all people including the People of the Book, after the age of prophethood with Isa ended. This is so there is no excuse for the People of the Book that Allah did not send His Messenger after the Prophet Isa. This is how Muhammad came to humanity bringing glad tidings to those who believe in Allah with the concept of monotheism and have faith in the law of the Messenger Muhammad and warning to those who disbelieve and reject these things. His coming was by the will of Allah.
The Prophet Musa reminded his people to be grateful for Allah's many blessings such as the birth of prophets from among them, kings, and even Allah granted them what He did not grant to anyone else in the whole world such as food from paradise.
The mentality of Bani Israel was very corrupt and broken. It was proven when the Prophet Musa ordered them to enter Palestine (the sacred land of Allah) based on Allah's command and without any hesitation, they answered: We cannot possibly enter Palestine because there are mighty people there. We will enter after they leave Palestine.
There were two among Bani Israel who had true faith and feared losing Allah's blessings and urged them to enter Palestine through its gate to be victorious. Reliance upon Allah is proof of faith.
