Day 6 · Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 62-76

Al-Baqarah 62–76

The condition for salvation is the same for anyone, namely faith in Allah, the Last Day, and righteous deeds; then is recounted the rebellion of the Children of Israel up to the story of the command to slaughter a female cow.

• Whoever from any group believes in Allah and the Last Day and does righteous deeds according to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad receives reward without fear or sorrow.
• The Children of Israel broke their covenant even though a mountain was raised above them, and they violated the rules of the Sabbath so they were transformed into apes as a lesson for the God-conscious.
• When commanded to slaughter a female cow, they kept asking questions because they doubted Musa's prophethood, although these questions were merely a way to evade.
• The cow that was finally specified was one that had never been used to plow or water crops, healthy, and without blemish, so they almost did not carry it out.
• Evil such as throwing accusations at each other in murder cases hardened their hearts more than stone, and some of their scholars deliberately altered the Torah.

Verse 62 explains that the system of faith that Allah has established for mankind is the same, whether for the believers from the nation of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), the Jews, Christians, or Sabians. Whoever they are, as long as they believe in Allah with the concept of tawhid brought by Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), believe in the Last Day, and do righteous deeds (worship) according to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), then for them is reward from Allah, there is no fear and no sorrow for them.

Verses 63 – 69 continue to recount the bad behavior of the Children of Israel such as breaking their covenant with Allah when they were threatened with the raising of Mount Sinai above them and violating the rules of worship on the Sabbath. As a result, Allah transformed them into apes so they would be an example to those living in that time and after, and a good lesson for the God-conscious.

The Children of Israel were also stubborn and asked many questions when Musa said that Allah commanded them to slaughter a female cow. This attitude was because they doubted Musa's prophethood. These questions were really just a way to evade.

Verses 70 and 71 continue from the previous verse regarding Allah's command to the Children of Israel to slaughter a female cow. They kept asking until they asked what exactly the cow was like because it was still unclear to them. Finally, Allah asked Musa to explain that the cow was a female cow that had never been used to plow land and not for watering plants, healthy, and without blemish. They almost did not carry it out because the specifications became increasingly difficult.

Verses 72 – 76 continue to recount the bad behavior of the Children of Israel. Among them are throwing accusations at each other for the murder they committed among themselves. These various crimes and sins caused their hearts to become harder than stone so that they had difficulty understanding Allah's revelation, including the Qur'an.

For that reason, Allah is teaching Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and his nation not to expect too much that the Children of Israel would believe and submit to the Islamic System that is applied. Because previously they had read Allah's revelation, namely the Torah, and then they altered it after deliberately manipulating it. They also showed different faces to the believers and were unwilling to be honest with Allah and their Messenger, let alone with the believers.
