Al-Ma'idah 83–95
The tears of some priests when hearing the revelation are made an example of accepting the truth, then the reading shifts to the rules on oaths, intoxicants and gambling, and the prohibition of hunting when in the sacred state.
Verses 83-85 continue to explain the character of some Christian priests whose hearts are open to accepting Islam as Allah's final religion. When they listen to the Qur'an, their eyes shed tears because of their knowledge of the truth of the Qur'an and the Messenger. They say: Our Lord, record us among the witnesses to the truth of the Qur'an and Muhammad. What reason do we have not to believe? Surely the truth has come to us and we greatly hope to be among the righteous. Allah answers their request and promises them Paradise and they will dwell in it eternally.
Verse 86 clearly states that whoever does not believe and rejects the Qur'an will be admitted by Allah into the fire of hell.
Verses 87-89 explain the management of wealth and food in Islam. Among these is the prohibition of making forbidden what Allah has made lawful and likewise the reverse, and not exceeding the limits of Allah's law. Consuming only what is lawful and good and being careful in swearing oaths in the name of Allah. Expiation (the fine for breaking an oath) is to feed ten poor people, or provide clothing or free a slave. If unable, then fast for three days.
Verses 90-95 continue to address the management of wealth and food in Islam. Among these is the prohibition of intoxicants, gambling, animals slaughtered or sacrificed in the name of idols and drawing lots, because all of these are unclean and the deeds of Satan. It is through intoxicants and gambling that Satan gets the opportunity to create enmity and hatred and prevent remembrance of Allah and performance of prayer. Muslims who claim to believe in Allah and His Messenger must abandon these things, because obedience to Allah is absolute. Entering Islam, true belief and doing much righteous deeds erase previous sins.
Allah tests the believers by establishing various rules regarding wealth and food so that it may be known who truly fears Allah and who disobeys Him. Among these is the prohibition of hunting while in the sacred state for Hajj or Umrah. Whoever does so must be punished according to the type of animal killed, or make expiation by feeding the poor or fasting.
