Day 8 · Surah Al-Baqarah Ayat 89-101

Al-Baqarah 89–101

The reason for the Children of Israel's rejection of the Qur'an is exposed: not because they doubt its truth, but because of envy that this blessing was sent down to another group.

Verses 89 – 93 still relate to the character and behavior of the Children of Israel who love to rebel against Allah and His Messenger. Among these is their rejection of the Book of the Qur'an which confirms the Books of the Torah and the Gospel. Yet previously, they asked for help against the disbelievers. However, after Allah revealed the Qur'an whose truth they recognized, they rejected it. So Allah curses every nation of disbelievers.

Allah judges the behavior of the Children of Israel to be very bad because they chose to disbelieve (reject the Qur'an) merely because they were displeased that Allah gave His favor (the Qur'an) to others besides their group, which made their anger increase. Allah reminds the disbelievers that He will surely punish them with disgraceful punishment.

Allah explains that the Children of Israel's claim that they rejected the Qur'an because revelation was not sent to their tribe is false. If they believed in Allah and His revelation, why did they kill the Prophets sent before them? Prophet Musa came bringing proofs of Allah's truth. So why did they still make a calf a partner with Allah as a god? Similarly, when Allah took their covenant and raised Mount Sinai above their heads so they would hold fast to that covenant, they said instead: 'We hear and we disobey.' They had become so addicted to worshipping the calf. If they believed, they would surely be able to affirm the oneness of Allah and not associate anyone or anything with Him.

Verses 94 – 101 continue to recount the bad behavior of the Children of Israel. They claim that only they will enter Paradise. Then Allah tests the truth of that claim with a real test, namely to love death in His way. In fact, they do not desire death at all because of the multitude of sins they have committed. Allah is All-Knowing of those who are wrongdoing and associate partners with Him.

Allah also informs us that the people most greedy for this worldly life are the Jews and those who associate partners with Allah. They are not only afraid of death, but also wish to live 1,000 years. Even if Allah gave them a life of 1,000 years, they would not be able to protect themselves from Allah's punishment. Allah is All-Seeing of what they do.

Allah explains that rejecting the Qur'an and Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the same as rejecting and being hostile to Allah, the angels, His Messengers, the angels Jibril and Mikail. Allah becomes the enemy of the disbelievers.

The Qur'an was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) with verses that explain all matters that mankind needs so that they live rightly according to what Allah wants. The Qur'an also explains the behavior of the People of the Scripture or the Children of Israel so we can learn from it. Those who reject the Qur'an are wicked transgressors.

A group of the Children of Israel or the People of the Scripture like to break their covenants with Allah, consciously reject Allah's revelation, and most of them are unwilling to believe in Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Qur'an. Even when Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent by Allah and confirmed the Book of the Torah that Allah sent down to them, a group from among them rejected it as if they did not know it.
