20. Al-Qabid — The Constrictor
Al-Qabidh means the Being who withholds sustenance from whom He wills in the manner He wills. Whereas Al-Basith is its opposite, namely the Being who expands sustenance in the manner He wills to whom He wills.
It is said that Al-Qabidh is the Being who takes the soul at the time of death; whereas Al-Basith is the expanding of form for souls in life.
There is another opinion stating that Al-Qabidh is the Being who accepts charity from the rich, whereas Al-Basith is the Being who gives sustenance to the weak and expands sustenance to the rich so that poverty does not remain, and restricts it from the poor so that capability does not remain.
Adopting the character of these two names is to restrain oneself from all besides Him, and expand oneself in all that He is pleased with. Not troubling others and not placing too much trust in them.
Its Efficacy Whoever writes the name Al-Qabidh on forty pieces of bread over forty days will not feel the pain of illness. And the efficacy of the name Al-Basith is: if someone invokes it after the Dhuha prayer ten times, while raising both hands to the sky and then wiping them on his face, then Allah will open for him one of the doors of wealth.
