26. As-Sami' — The All-Hearing
As-Sami' means the All-Hearing, when attributed to Allah the Almighty, is an additional attribute to His knowledge. It means that Allah the Almighty can hear everything that exists, even if its sound is very faint. Whereas the hearing possessed by creatures is by means of the ear, which loses its ability to hear if the organ is damaged. But the condition of hearing that exists in the Lord is not like this. He hears without the means of an ear, whether what He hears is sound, color, or object. He can hear the footsteps of an ant on a smooth rock in pitch darkness. And He hears the praise that someone utters to Him and then rewards them; and hears the prayers of those who ask Him and then grants their requests. His hearing cannot be penetrated by any event, because He does not hear with ears or a hearing apparatus. Thus, hearing according to Allah the Almighty is a metaphor for an attribute through which the perfection of His created attributes is revealed.
A servant has a share of this hearing, but it is limited, for he cannot hear everything that can be heard, and even sounds that are nearest to him may go unheard. Moreover, as we have mentioned, his hearing is assisted by an instrument (the sense of hearing) that can be damaged; and if the sound is too faint, the servant can no longer hear it.
A servant's good fortune through religion with this name requires two conditions. First, it must be known that Allah the Almighty is All-Hearing. Therefore, he must guard his tongue. Second, it should be known that Allah did not create hearing for him except so that he might listen to the Word of Allah and the contents of His Book that He has revealed. Thus he will obtain guidance to Allah's path.
Its Efficacy Whoever reads it on Thursday after the Dhuha prayer fifty times, then he will become one whose prayers are answered.
