34. Al-Ghafur — The Great Forgiver
He is the One who gives abundant forgiveness and conceals. Ism this has the same meaning as another ism of Allah, namely Al-Ghaffar, yet it conveys a kind of mubalaghah (intensiveness) that Al-Ghaffar does not convey. For Al-Ghafur conveys the mubalaghah that arises from the repeated increase of forgiveness. He is Ghafur in the sense that He possesses the trait of forgiveness in perfect form, reaching its utmost peak. Mubalaghah understood from Al-Ghaffar is in terms of quantity, while mubalaghah understood from Al-Ghafur is in terms of condition.
Embodying the character of ism this requires a person to constantly seek forgiveness and forgive the mistakes of others. This is the key to forgiveness from Allah SWT, as He says in surah An-Nur, which states:
"And let not those who possess abundance and ease among you swear that they will not give aid to relatives, the needy, and those who emigrate in the way of Allah, and let them pardon and overlook. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? .." (QS An Nur: 22) The benefit is Whoever writes ism this over someone suffering from fever will surely be healed. And whoever writes Sayyidul Istighfar then wipes it off with water and gives it to drink to someone who is struggling in facing death such that his tongue finds it difficult to utter words, the moment of death will become easy for that person. It has been tried by many people and has worked well.
