35. Ash Shakur — The Most Appreciative
This page explains the meaning of Allah's name Ash-Shakur, namely the One who rewards a small deed with a great reward.
He is the One who gives abundantly for a small deed. There is also another opinion that says the meaning of Asy-Syakur is: The One who praises His servant abundantly by mentioning his acts of obedience.
The reality of gratitude in a servant is a feeling of joy in the heart toward the Giver of blessings, such that this gratitude then extends to his limbs, so that his limbs are then used to serve the Giver of blessings.
There is also another opinion which says that the meaning of ism this is: He is the One who rewards a small deed with a lofty rank. He gives reward for the deeds done by a servant, during his short life in this world, with the boundless bliss of the Hereafter. So, whoever repays a kindness with a manifold reward is said to have been grateful for that blessing. And whoever praises someone who does good is also said to have shown gratitude to him.
Among a servant's good fortune from ism this, it is indicated that he should show gratitude toward Allah's servants for the good they have done for him, or repay all their kindness with something better than what they have done. This is a most praiseworthy trait or character. That is why the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
Whoever is not thankful to others is also not grateful to Allah. As for a servant's gratitude to Allah, it is by recognising the blessings Allah has given him, and not using all those blessings to commit acts of sin against Him, but using them to be obedient to Him, and that is solely by Allah's grace and enabling. And he should also always praise Allah in whatever way he is capable of, even though that is difficult for him except by the enabling of Allah SWT.
Among the fine praises of Allah SWT is what is mentioned in the Wirid as Sattar by Sayyid Yahya Al-Bakuni, which states among other things:
I am not capable of offering You praise, as You have praised Yourself.
How sweet these words are, as though he wished to declare that fitting praise of Allah is not within human capacity. That is why he leaves that praise to the One capable of it, namely Allah Himself. This is the most perfect expression.
Embodying the character of ism this requires a person to become a servant who is grateful for all the blessings Allah has bestowed upon him, in the manner that pleases Him, and for what Allah bestows upon him through other people, by magnifying the small and repaying it.
The benefit is Whoever writes it for someone suffering from shortness of breath or feeling bodily fatigue, then the writing is wiped off with water and given to drink and used to wipe the body, by Allah SWT's permission he will surely be cured of his illness.
