40. Al-Hasib — The All-Reckoning
Al Hasib is the same as Al-Kafiy, meaning the Sufficient One; derived from the word ahsabanior kafani, and hasbiyallahor kafaini. He is the One who calls creation to account on the Day of Resurrection. Imam Al-Ghazali held the view that Al Hasib is derived from the word hasiba which means "honoured and perfect." Another opinion states that al hasbu is al-iktifa', meaning that Al-Hasib is the One who gives His servants everything they need. And there is also an opinion that this ism is derived from the word al-ihsha', that is, the One who reckons all the deeds of His servants according to their respective groups. The disbelievers are made to reckon themselves, and then they pronounce upon themselves the punishment of Hell, after which they enter it. The people of faith and perfection (kamal) are reckoned by the angels, witnessed carefully by the multitude, so as to display their excellence and serve as proof against others. As for most of the believers who deserve punishment, Allah places His hand upon them, and they acknowledge the sins they have committed; then Allah reproaches or punishes them, and after that forgives them. That is the reckoning (hisab) according to Allah SWT's will, so that the reckoning proceeds swiftly.
There is an opinion that all creation is reckoned at the same time; Glory be to Allah who has power over that. He says:
"... And He is the swiftest of reckoners." (QS. Al-An'am: 62)
To embody this ism requires you to fear Allah SWT, as well as to hope in Him and glorify Him.
Its Benefits Whoever fears being defeated by his companion should recite this ism every day before sunrise and after sunset 27 times. Then within a week, Allah will have delivered him from that fear. The recitation of this ism should begin on a Thursday.
