42. Al-Karim

42. Al-Karim — The All-Generous

Al Karim is the One who gives abundantly and does good without being asked. This differs from As-Sakhiy (generous) who likes to give when asked. On this basis, Allah gave Himself the name Al-Karim, not As-Sakhiy.

Another opinion states that Al-Karim means that if He is able to retaliate, He forgives instead; if He promises, He keeps it; and if He gives, He exceeds what is expected, regardless of how much He gives or to whom He gives. If a need for someone other than Him arises, He is not pleased. He does not neglect anyone who seeks refuge in or surrenders to Him, and He suffices that person from any other intermediary or defender. No one possesses these attributes except Allah SWT.

Ibnu 'Atha said: "Al-Karim is the One whose bounty is never exceeded by hope."

To embody this ism requires you to make every part of your body an endowment devoted to Him, to turn your face towards Him, and to direct your will towards Him.

Its Benefits Whoever increases their dhikr with this ism when about to sleep and does so consistently, Allah will implant the quality of generosity (karim) into the hearts of the gnostics (arif).
