63. Al-Qayyum — The Self-Sufficient
Al-Qayyum is the One who is Self-Subsisting, who in His Subsistence does not need the help of anything else; rather, all else needs His help.
Know (may Allah guide you) that everything is divided into: (1) entities that do not need a place, such as honor and attributes, and this is said to be "unable to stand on its own"; (2) there are also entities that need a place, like precious gems, and this is said to "stand on its own." But even though a gem stands on its own, it still needs several things that must exist for its existence and are conditions for it. If in this existence there is something that exists and is sufficient in itself through its own essence, having no support from anything else, and its existence does not require the existence of anything else, then it is the one that stands on its own absolutely. If, in addition to what has been mentioned, it also sustains all that exists, so that nothing exists except by its governance, then it is Al-Qayyum, and this is none other than Allah, the Most High.
A servant enters into this attribute only according to the degree of his sufficiency apart from Him. It is said that the Children of Israel once asked Prophet Musa (peace be upon him), when they entered the sea, to teach them the Greatest Name. Then Prophet Musa answered: "O Living, O Self-Subsisting (that is Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum), and Allah saved them from the danger of drowning.
Its benefit Whoever recites it in part (Ya Qayyum alone), then his drowsiness will disappear. And whoever recites it along with Al-Hayy (that is: Ya Hayyu Ya Qayyum), from sunrise until the sun rises high, then he will gain boundless joy in himself. And whoever supplicates with it in the vast ocean, then Allah will save him from the danger of drowning.
