82. Al-Afuww — The Pardoner
Al-Afuww is the One who wipes away all evil and forgives those who have committed sins. This name is close in meaning to Al-Ghafur, but it is more perfect. For Al-Ghafur is concealment (as-sitr),while Al-Afuww is erasure (al-mahw).
It is said that the angels who are entrusted to record the deeds of humans present the record of their deeds on the Day of Judgment, and then they see that much of the record has been erased, although they know what was written in it. So they become aware that Allah has willed goodness for this person.
Allah says:
"And it is He who accepts repentance from His servants and pardons misdeeds..." (Qur'an 42:25)
O Allah, make us among that group. Verily, You are capable of all things.
To conduct oneself with this name requires you to forgive the wrongs of others and pardon the one who oppresses you; even repay with good deeds and pray for him, in accordance with the nature of Allah, the Most High. For however many sins His servants commit, He still provides for them and gives them well-being; even He erases their sins and replaces them with goodness, if He sees them inclined toward genuine repentance.
Its benefit Whoever increases remembrance (dhikr) with this name, then Allah will surely open for him the gates of pardon and forgiveness.
