84. Malik Ul Mulk — The Master of the Kingdom
Malik al-Mulk is the One who conducts all affairs in His kingdom according to what He wills. None can refuse His decree and none can oppose His judgment. Al-Mulk means "kingdom," and Al-Malik means "the Absolutely Powerful." All that exists forms one kingdom, and He is its Master. It is all one kingdom because there is a connection between every part and another. And although it is many from one aspect, truly from another aspect it is one, because of its harmony in need of its Creator in bringing it into existence and sustaining it. The example is the human body, which is a kingdom for the human essence, composed of countless different members, yet they seem to help one another in realizing one common goal; with this nature, it is a kingdom. So also the universe is like one person, and the parts of the universe are like its members; they too help one another in realizing one goal—to perfect the good that is possible according to the will of Divine generosity. And only Allah, the Most High, owns it; He has no partner. To Him belongs the kingdom, and to Him belongs all praise, and He is Most Powerful over all things.
To draw near (taqarrub)with this name requires one to always be obedient in worship to Allah, the Most High, by being present with the heart so as not to be preoccupied with anything else.
Imam As-Shadhili said: "Stop at one door so that several doors may open to you. Submit to one King so that all creatures will submit to you." Its benefit Whoever recites this name regularly, then Allah will give him wealth, and He will enrich him through His favor and generosity.
