88. Al-Ghaniyy — The All-Sufficient
It is said that Al-Ghaniy is the One who is sufficient unto Himself, in His Essence, His names, and His attributes, apart from all else, while all else needs Him. Whereas Al-Mughniy is the One who grants wealth to whomever He wills among His servants.
There is another opinion that says Al-Ghaniy is the One who does not depend on anything else, whether in His essence or His attributes, and is indeed free from any connection to anything other than Himself. Whereas the true Al-Mughniy is the One who has no need whatsoever for anything else. A person who has a need and possesses what he needs is called wealthy in a majaz (figurative) sense; and this may exist in someone other than Allah. And a person who has no need left except need for Allah is truly wealthy, even if he possesses nothing of the essentials of need. That is why Allah SWT says:
"... And Allah is the All-Sufficient, while you are the ones in need (of Him)..." (QS. Muhammad: 38)
To embody the ism Al-Ghaniy is to display your poverty and need for Him, always and forever. Whereas to embody the ism Al-Mughniy is to be more certain of what is with Allah than of what is in your own hands, and to be generous and charitable towards the servants of Allah SWT. Its Benefits Ism Al Ghaniy, if recited over an illness in one's own body or someone else's body, Allah SWT will surely remove that illness. As for the one who does dhikr with ism Al-Mughniy a thousand times every day, Allah will surely make him very wealthy.
