89. Al-Mughi — The Bestower of Riches
It is said that Al-Ghaniy is the Essence Who feels sufficient in His Essence, His names, and His attributes, apart from anything else. And all else is in need of Him. Whereas Al-Mughniy is the Essence Who grants riches to whomever He wills among His servants.
There is another opinion that says Al-Ghaniy is He Who does not depend on anything else, neither in His essence nor in His attributes, and is indeed free from any connection to anything else. Whereas the true Al-Mughniy is He Who has no need whatsoever of anything else. A person who is in need and who has what he needs is called rich only in a figurative sense; and this may exist in someone other than Allah. And a person who has no remaining need except the need for Allah, then he is truly rich, even if no original need remains for him. That is why Allah SWT says:
"... And it is Allah Who is Self-Sufficient, while you are the ones in need (of Him)..." (QS. Muhammad: 38)
Taking on the character of ism Al-Ghaniy means displaying poverty and need before Him, always and forever. Whereas taking on the character of ism Al-Mughniy means placing greater trust in what is with Allah than in what is in your own hand, and being generous and openhanded toward the servants of Allah SWT. Its Benefit Ism Al Ghaniy, if recited over something that is ill in one's own body or the body of another, will, by Allah SWT's leave, have its illness removed. Whereas a person who recites dhikr with ism Al-Mughniy a thousand times every day will, by Allah's leave, be made abundantly wealthy.
