91. Ad-Daarr — The Giver of Affliction
Both ism here are ism of attribute that show the perfection of Allah's power. There is no harm, benefit, evil, or good except by His will alone.
Allah SWT says:
Say, that all of it comes from Allah.
Yet proper conduct toward Allah's right requires that evil be attributed to the servant. As indicated in Allah's word calling on human beings to observe proper conduct toward His right:
Whatever good reaches you is from Allah, and whatever ill befalls you is from (the fault of) yourself ... (QS An Nisa': 79)
Look at the proper conduct of Sayyidina Khidhir (peace be upon him), who attributed a flaw to himself, as told by Allah in His word:
... and I intended to damage the boat ... (QS Al Kahfi: 79)
And yet, from the earlier story, a conclusion can be drawn that he did that by the guidance and will of Allah, as expressed in the following word of Allah:
... and I did not do that of my own accord ... (QS Al Kahfi: 82)
It is said that the Giver of Harm and the Giver of Benefit is the Essence from Whom all good, evil, benefit, and harm originate, and all of it is attributed to Allah SWT, whether through the mediation of angels, human beings, inanimate objects, or without any mediation. Do not suppose that poison itself is what kills or harms, or that food itself is what satisfies or benefits, or that angels, humans, devils, or other creatures such as planets and stars can give good, evil, benefit, or harm by themselves. All of that occurs through causes that have been made subject to them.
Drawing near through these two ism requires you not to expect benefit from anyone other than Allah SWT and not to seek relief from difficulty from anyone other than Him.
Its Benefit Whoever recites dhikr with ism Adh Dharr a hundred times every Friday night will attain a rank close to Allah SWT. Whereas the benefit of ism An Nafi' is that if a person who is intimate with his wife recites dhikr in his heart with this ism, then his wife will love him with all her heart, and they will be blessed with righteous children.
