Supplications for Travel From Setting Off to Arrival
For the supplication for mounting a land vehicle
سُبْحَانَ الَّذِيْ سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِيْنَ. وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمـُنْقَلِبُوْنَ
Subhaanalladzii sakh-khoro lanaa haadzaa wamaa kunnaa lahuu muqriniin, wa innaa ilaa robbinaa lamungqolibuun
Glory be to the One who has subjected this vehicle for us, for we were unable to master it ourselves. And indeed to our Lord we will return (on the Day of Resurrection).
or in its longer form
بِسْمِ اللهِ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ (سُبْحَانَ الَّذِيْ سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِيْنَ. وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُوْنَ) الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ ظَلَمْتُ نَفْسِيْ فَاغْفِرْ لِيْ، فَإِنَّهُ لاَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ.
Bismillaah, alhamdu lillaah (subhaanalloohilladzii sakh-khoro lanaa haadzaa wamaa kunnaa lahuu muqriniin, wa innaa ilaa robbinaa lamunqolibuun). Alhamdu lillaah 3x, Alloohu akbar 3x, subhaanakalloohumma innii zholamtu nafsii faghfirlii, fa-innahuu laa yaghfirudz-dzunuuba illaa anta
"In the name of Allah, all praise is due to Allah. Glory be to the One who has subjected this vehicle for us, for we were unable to master it ourselves. And indeed to our Lord we will return (on the Day of Resurrection). All praise is due to Allah (3x), Glory be to You, O Allah! Indeed I have wronged myself, so forgive me. Indeed none forgives sins except You." (Narrated by Abu Dawud 3/34, At-Tirmidhi 5/501)
For the supplication for boarding a sea vessel
بِسْمِ اللهِ مَجْرَيهَا وَمُرْسَيهَآ اِنَّ رَبّىْ لَغَفُوْرٌرَّحِيْمٌ
BISMILLAAHI MAJREEHAA WA MURSAAHAA INNA ROBBII LAGHOFUURUR ROHIIM
In the name of Allah, who makes this vessel sail and anchor; indeed my Lord is truly Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (Hud: 41)
اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، (سُبْحَانَ الَّذِيْ سَخَّرَ لَنَا هَذَا وَمَا كُنَّا لَهُ مُقْرِنِيْنَ. وَإِنَّا إِلَى رَبِّنَا لَمُنْقَلِبُوْنَ) اللَّهُمَّ إِنَّا نَسْأَلُكَ فِيْ سَفَرِنَا هَذَا الْبِرَّ وَالتَّقْوَى، وَمِنَ الْعَمَلِ مَا تَرْضَى، اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيْفَةُ فِي اْلأَهْلِ، اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ وَعْثَاءِ السَّفَرِ وَكَآبَةِ الْمَنْظَرِ وَسُوْءِ الْمُنْقَلَبِ فِي الْمَالِ وَاْلأَهْلِ. وَإِذَا رَجَعَ قَالَهُنَّ وَزَادَ فِيْهِنَّ: آيِبُوْنَ تَائِبُوْنَ عَابِدُوْنَ لِرَبِّنَا حَامِدُوْنَ.
Alloohu akbar 3x, (subhaanalladzii sakh-khoro lanaa haadzaa wamaa kunnaa lahuu muqriniina wa innaa ilaa robbinaa lamunqolibuun). Allohumma innaa nas-aluka fii safarinaa haadza albirro wattaqwa wa minal ‘amali maa tardhoo, Alloohumma hawwin ‘alainaa safaronaa haadzaa wa athwi’annaa bu’dah, Alloohumma antash shoohibu fis safari wal kholiifatu fil ahli, Alloohumma innii a’uudzubika miw wa’tsaa-is safari wa ka-aabatil manzhori wa suu-il munqolabi fil maali wal ahl. (If returning from a journey, this supplication is recited again with the following addition) Aayibuuna taa-ibuuna ‘aabiduuna lirobbinaa haamiduun.
"Allah is the Greatest (3x). Glory be to the One who has subjected this vehicle for us, for we were unable to master it ourselves. And indeed to our Lord we will return (on the Day of Resurrection). O Allah! Indeed we ask You for righteousness and God-consciousness in this journey of ours, and for deeds that please You. O Allah! Make this journey of ours easy for us and shorten its distance for us. O Allah! You are the Companion on this journey and the Guardian of the family (left behind). O Allah! Indeed I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from a distressing sight, and from any ill change befalling my wealth and family."
Upon returning, the above travel supplication is recited, with the addition: "We return repentant, still worshipping, and ever praising our Lord." (Narrated by Muslim 2/998)
or the short version suffices
اللَّهُمَّ هَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا سَفَرَنَا هَذَا وَاطْوِ عَنَّا بُعْدَهُ، اللَّهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيْفَةُ فِي اْلأَهْلِ
Alloohumma hawwin ‘alainaa safaronaa haadzaa wa athwi’annaa bu’dah, Alloohumma antash shoohibu fis safari wal kholiifatu fil ahli
"O Allah, make this journey of ours easy for us, and shorten its distance. O Allah who accompanies us on the journey, and You are also the One who protects our family."
اَللَّهُمَّ رَبَّ السَّمَاوَاتِ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَظْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ اْلأَرَضِيْنَ السَّبْعِ وَمَا أَقْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الشَّيَاطِيْنَ وَمَا أَضْلَلْنَ، وَرَبَّ الرِّيَاحِ وَمَا ذَرَيْنَ. أَسْأَلُكَ خَيْرَ هَذِهِ الْقَرْيَةِ وَخَيْرَ أَهْلِهَا، وَخَيْرَ مَا فِيْهَا، وَأَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنْ شَرِّهَا وَشَرِّ أَهْلِهَا وَشَرِّ مَا فِيْهَا.
Alloohumma robbas samaawaatis sab’i wamaa azhlalna, wa robbal arodhiinas sab’i wamaa aqlalna, warobbasy-syayaatiina wamaa adhlalna, warobbar riyaaha wamaa dzaroina. As-aluka khoiro haadziihil qoryati wa khoiro ahlihaa, wa khoiro maa fiihaa, wa a’uudzubika min syarriha wa syarri ahlihaa wa syarri maa fiihaa.
"O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and all they shade, Lord of the seven earths and all they bear, Lord of the devils and all they lead astray, Lord of the winds and all they scatter. I ask You for the goodness of this village, the goodness of its people, and the goodness of what is in it. I seek refuge in You from its evil, the evil of its people, and the evil of what is in it." (Narrated by Al-Hakim)
لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لاَ شَرِيْكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِيْ وَيُمِيْتُ وَهُوَ حَيٌّ لاَ يَمُوْتُ، بِيَدِهِ الْخَيْرُ، وَهُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيْرُ.
Laa ilaaha illalloohu wahdahuu laa syariikalah, lahul mulku walahul hamdu yuhyii wayumiitu wahuwa hayyun laa yamuut, biyadihil khoiir, wahua ‘alaa kulii syai-in qodiir.
"There is no god worthy of worship except Allah, the One, He has no partner. To Him belongs the dominion and to Him belongs all praise. He gives life and causes death. He is Ever-Living and does not die. In His hand is all good. He has power over all things." (Narrated by At-Tirmidhi 5/291, Al-Hakim 1/538)
