Supplication to Soothe the Grieving and Deeply Sad Heart

This page gathers supplications recommended to be recited to soothe a grieving heart and overcome deep sadness.

The supplication to soothe sorrow contains acknowledgment of oneself as a servant of Allah and request for the Qur'an to be made a comfort for the heart and a remover of sorrow.
There is also a supplication for protection from sadness, weakness, laziness, stinginess, cowardice, the burden of debt, and oppression by others.
For deep sadness, it is recommended to recite a statement of tawhid that glorifies Allah as the Lord of heaven, earth, and the Throne.
Another supplication for deep sadness contains request to always receive Allah's mercy and not to be left dependent on oneself even for a moment.

Supplication to Soothe a Grieving Heart

اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ عَبْدُكَ، ابْنُ عَبْدِكَ، ابْنُ أَمَتِكَ، نَاصِيَتِيْ بِيَدِكَ، مَاضٍ فِيَّ حُكْمُكَ، عَدْلٌ فِيَّ قَضَاؤُكَ، أَسْأَلُكَ بِكُلِّ اسْمٍ هُوَ لَكَ، سَمَّيْتَ بِهِ نَفْسَكَ، أَوْ أَنْزَلْتَهُ فِيْ كِتَابِكَ، أَوْ عَلَّمْتَهُ أَحَدًا مِنْ خَلْقِكَ، أَوِ اسْتَأْثَرْتَ بِهِ فِيْ عِلْمِ الْغَيْبِ عِنْدَكَ، أَنْ تَجْعَلَ الْقُرْآنَ رَبِيْعَ قَلْبِيْ، وَنُوْرَ صَدْرِيْ، وَجَلاَءَ حُزْنِيْ، وَذَهَابَ هَمِّيْ.

Alloohumma innii a'abduka ibnu 'abdika,ibnu amatika, naashiyati biyadika, maadhin fiyya hukmuka, 'adlun fiyya qodhoo-uka, as-aluka bikulii ismin huwa laka, sammaita bihii nafsaka, au anzaltahuu fii kitaabika, au 'allamtahuu ahadan min kholqika, awis ta`tsarta bihii fii 'ilmil ghoibi 'indaka, an taj'alal qu-aana robii'a qolbii, wanuuro shodrii, wajalaa-a huznii, wadzahaaba hammii.

O Allah! Indeed, I am Your servant, the son of Your male servant and the son of Your female servant. My forelock is in Your hand. Your decree regarding me is just. Your judgment concerning me is fair. I ask You by every name which is Yours, which You have called Yourself, or revealed in Your Book, or taught to one of Your creatures, or kept for Yourself in the knowledge of the unseen with You, to make the Qur'an the spring of my heart, the light of my breast, the remover of my sorrow, and the remover of my worry. اَللَّهُمَّ إِنِّيْ أَعُوْذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحُزْنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ.

Alloohumma innii a'uudzubika minal hammi walhuzni, wal 'ajzi wal kasali wal bukhli wal jubni wa dhola'ad daini wa gholabatir rijaal

O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from stinginess and cowardice, from the burden of debt and the oppression of men. (Reported by Al-Bukhari 7/154, Muslim 4/2092)

Supplication for Deep Sorrow

لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ الْعَظِيْمُ الْحَلِيْمُ، لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيْمُ، لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ اللهُ رَبُّ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَرَبُّ اْلأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيْمُ.

Laa ilaaha illalloohul 'azhimul haliim, laa ilaaha illalloohu robbul 'arsyil 'azhiim, laa ilaaha illalloohu robbus samaawaati wa robbul ardhi wa robbul 'arsyil kariim.

There is no deity except Allah the Mighty, the Forbearing. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of the Honored Throne. (Reported by Al-Bukhari 7/154)

اَللَّهُمَّ رَحْمَتَكَ أَرْجُو فَلاَ تَكِلْنِيْ إِلَى نَفْسِيْ طَرْفَةَ عَيْنٍ، وَأَصْلِحْ لِيْ شَأْنِيْ كُلَّهُ، لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ.

Alloohumma rohmataka arjuu falaa takilnii ilaa nafsii thorfata 'ainin wa ashlih lii sya`nii kullah, laa ilaaha illaa anta

O Allah! I hope for Your mercy, so do not abandon me to myself for even the blink of an eye. Set right for me all my affairs. There is no deity except You. (Reported by Abu Dawud 4/324)

لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ سُبْحَانَكَ إِنِّيْ كُنْتُ مِنَ الظَّالِمِيْنَ.

Laa ilaaha illaa anta subhaanaka innii kuntu minazh zhoolimiin

There is no deity except You. Glorified be You. Indeed, I have been among the wrongdoers. (Reported by At-Tirmidhi 5/529 and Al-Hakim)

اللهُ اللهُ رَبِّي لاَ أُشْرِكُ بِهِ شَيْئًا.

Alloohu Allohu laa usyriku bihii syai-aa

Allah, Allah is my Lord. I associate not with Him anything. (Reported by Abu Dawud 2/87)
