Supplications Before Learning and After Learning

This page gathers supplications that are recommended to be recited before starting to study and after completing study or attending a gathering of knowledge.

• The supplication before studying contains request for knowledge to be increased, understanding to be granted, and to be made among the righteous.
• There is also an additional supplication before studying that requests inspiration in the form of knowledge to recognize the commands and prohibitions of Allah, as well as light and swift understanding of lessons.
• The supplication after studying contains request for truth to be shown as truth and falsehood to be shown as falsehood, so that they are easy to follow and avoid.
• Another supplication after studying contains request that the knowledge learned not be forgotten and be returned when needed, concluded with glorification and seeking forgiveness.

Supplication Before Learning

رَبِّ زِدْنِي عِلْمًا، وَارْزُقْنِيْ فَهْمًا وَاجْعَلْنِيْ مِنَ الصَّالِحِيْنَ

Robbii Zidnii 'Ilmaa, Warzuqnii Fahmaa, Waj'alnii Minash-Shoolihiin.

O my Lord, increase me in knowledge and grant me understanding, and make me among the righteous.

اَللَّهُمَّ أَلْهِمْنىِ عِلْمًا اَعْرِفُ بِهِ اَوَامِرَكَ وَاَعْرِفُ بِهِ نَوَا هِيْكَ. وَارْزُقْنِى اَللَّهُمَّ بَلَغَةَ فَهْمِ النَبِيِّيْنَ وَفَصَاحَةَ حِفْظِ الْمـُرْسَلِيْنَ وَسُرْعَةَ اِلْهَامِ الْمَلاَئِكَةِ الْمـُقَرَّبِيْنَ وَاَكْرِمْنِى اَللَّهُمَّ بِنُوْرِ الْعِلْمِ وَسُرْعَةِالْفَهْمِ وَاَخْرِجْنِى مِنْ ظُلُمَاتِ الْوَهْمِ وَافْتَحْ لِى اَبْوَابَ رَحْمَتِكَ وَعَلِّمْنِى اَسْرَارَ حِكْمَتِكَ يَارَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ

Alloohumma alhimnii 'ilman a'rifu bihi awaamiroka wa a'rifu bihi nawaahIIka warzuqnii Alloohumma balaghota fahmin nabiyyIIna wa fashoohati hifZHIl mursaliina wa sur'ati ilhamil malaa'ikatil muqorro biina wa akrimniI Alloohumma binuuril 'ilmi wasur'atil fahmi wa akhrijnii min ZHulumaatil wahmi waftah lii abwaaba rohmatika wa'alliMnii asrooro hikmatika yaa robbal 'aalmiin

O Allah, inspire me with knowledge by which I can recognize Your commands and prohibitions, and grant me, O Allah, the understanding of the prophets and the eloquence of those entrusted with the Message, and the swift inspiration of the angels brought near to You. Honor me, O Allah, with the light of knowledge and swiftness of understanding, and bring me out from the darkness of doubt, and open for me the doors of Your mercy, and teach me the secrets of Your wisdom, O Lord of all worlds.

Supplication After Studying / After Leaving a Gathering of Knowledge

اَللَّهُمَّ أَرِنَا الْحَقَّ حَقًّا وَارْزُقْنَا اتِّـبَاعَه وَأَرِنَا الْبَاطِلَ بَاطِلاً وَارْزُقْنَا اجْتِنَابَهُ

Aalloohumma Arinal Haqqo HaqqoO, Warzuqnat tibaa'ah. Wa Arinal baathila BaaThilaa, Warzuqnaj- tinaabah.

O Allah, show us the truth as truth and grant us the ability to follow it. And show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us the ability to avoid it.

اَللَّهُمَّ اِنِّى اَسْتَوْدِعُكَ مَا عَلَّمْتَنِيْهِ فَارْدُدْهُ اِلَىَّ عِنْدَ حَاجَتِى اِلَيْهِ وَلاَ تَنْسَنِيْهِ يَا رَبَّ الْعَالَمِيْنَ

Allahumma innii astaudi'uka maa allamtaniihi fardudhu ilayya 'inda haajatiI ilaihi walaa tansaniihi yaa robbal 'aalamiin.

O Allah, I entrust to You what You have taught me, so return it to me when I need it, and do not make me forget it, O Lord of all worlds.

سُبْحَانَكَ اللَّهُمَّ وَبِحَمْدِكَ، أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لاَ إِلَـهَ إِلاَّ أَنْتَ، أَسْتَغْفِرُكَ وَأَتُوْبُ إِلَيْكَ.

Subhaanakalloohumma wabihamdika asyhadu allaa ilaaha illaa anta astaghfiruka wa atuubu ilaiik.

"Glorified be You, O Allah, and praised be You. I bear witness that there is no deity except You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You." (Reported by At-Tirmidhi and An-Nasai)
