The Sunnah of Kissing the Black Stone in Islam
The recommended acts of kissing the Black Stone are: 1. Face the Black Stone when about to begin tawaf and say takbir while raising the hands as when about to stand for prayer, then touch or kiss it.
2. Touching the Black Stone is done by kissing it, or by placing the cheek/forehead/face against it. If unable to kiss, it suffices to touch it. If touching is not possible, it suffices to gesture with the hand and then kiss that hand. If the gesture is done with a stick, then what is kissed is the stick.
3. Performing tawaf on foot. Those who are unable can perform it by riding, in a wheelchair, being carried, or in other reasonable ways.
4. Performing al-idhtiba', which is placing the middle of the ihram cloth under the right armpit and placing both ends over the left shoulder. Idhtiba' is not necessary while performing prayer. However, after prayer is complete, idhtiba' is done again. Moreover, idhtiba' is done only during the performance of tawaf that will be followed by sa'i and only for men.
5. Intending. Tawaf al-Qudum (arrival), Tawaf al-Wada' (farewell), and Tawaf al-Tatawwu' (voluntary) require intention. As for Tawaf al-Ifadah (the Hajj pillar) and Tawaf of Umrah (the Umrah pillar), intention is not required separately because the intention for them is already included with the intention of Hajj or Umrah. However, intending for both of these tawaf is considered good.
6. Order, which means performing everything in sequence and continuously without alternating.
However, during the Hajj season with many people, it can be assured that it is very difficult to be able to touch or kiss it. What needs to be paid attention to is that a Muslim should not jostle and hurt other Muslims by pushing or pulling just to touch the Black Stone. Because touching the Black Stone is sunnah, while not hurting a Muslim is an obligation. Hurting a Muslim is forbidden.
