The Importance of the Role of Prophet Dawud in Islam
Dawud is one of the few prophets who also received the blessing of being a king. While most other prophets preached under pressure from the rulers of their time, Dawud preached while also being a king. So in addition to fulfilling the duties of prophethood, he also carried out the obligation to ensure the Kingdom of Israel became a strong and respected kingdom. His role as both a prophet and king received very high honor among Muslims. The figure of Dawud and his son Sulaiman became an icon as an example of how a leader can rule justly. Prophet Dawud also received very high honor in the Qur'an and is often mentioned alongside other prophets. For example:
And We granted to him Ishaq and Ya'qub. Each of them We guided. And We guided Nuh before them. And from his descendants, Dawud, Sulaiman, Ayyub, Yusuf, Musa and Harun. And thus do We reward those who do good. QS. Al-'An`am [6]: 84

The extraordinary worship of Prophet Dawud also received honor from Prophet Muhammad, as mentioned in a hadith:
From Abdullah bin Amr bin Al'as: "The Messenger of Allah said to me, 'The prayer most loved by Allah is the prayer of Prophet Dawud, and the fasting most loved by Allah is the fasting of Prophet Dawud. He used to sleep half the night, pray for a third of the night, and then sleep again for one-sixth of it. He used to fast every other day.'"
