Fasting on the day of Arafah is recommended for those who are not performing the pilgrimage, its time falls on the day of standing at Arafah, which is the 9th of Dhu al-Hijjah. Its virtue is very great according to the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
From Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), he indeed said:
"Fasting on Arafah is counted by Allah as erasing the sins of the coming year, while fasting on Ashura erases the sins that have passed." (Narrated by Muslim).
And for those performing the Hajj, it is not recommended to fast on Arafah so that it can give strength to the body in performing the pilgrimage.
According to the hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her), people were in doubt regarding whether the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was fasting on the day of Arafah. Then milk was sent to him when he was standing at Arafah on his camel, and he drank it. (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)
