Monday–Thursday Fasting and Its Evidence According to Islam

An explanation of the special merits of Monday and Thursday which form the basis for the recommendation to fast voluntarily on those two days, starting from the fact that deeds are presented to Allah, the doors of Paradise being opened, up to the days the Prophet was born and began travelling.

• People's deeds of worship are reported to Allah every Monday and Thursday, and the Prophet stated that he was pleased for his deeds to be reported while he was fasting.
• The doors of Paradise are opened on Monday and Thursday so that the sins of servants who do not associate partners with Allah are forgiven, except for those who are estranged from one another.
• Thursday is also known as the day the Prophet often chose to begin a journey, including when he set out for the Battle of Tabuk.
• Monday is the day the Prophet Muhammad was born as well as the day he began receiving revelation, as he himself explained.

Monday–Thursday Fasting and Its Evidence According to Islam

There are several merits contained in Monday and Thursday, based of course on several narrations that point to it.

In accordance with his hadith from Abu Hurairah ra,

"All of a person's deeds of worship are reported on Monday and Thursday, and I am very pleased if my deeds of worship are reported while I am fasting" (HR. Tirmidzi)

Here are some virtues of Monday-Thursday fasting that you should know:

Monday and Thursday are the days when the doors of Paradise are opened

So that on those two days, all the sins committed by Muslims such as Sins Not Forgiven by Allah SWT will receive forgiveness from Allah SWT, except for those who are in a state of enmity with one another. (Read: Mutih Fasting Before Marriage)

From Abu Harrairah ra, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, said:

تُفْتَحُ أَبْوَابُ الْجَنَّةِ يَوْمَ الاثْنَيْنِ وَيَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ فَيُغْفَرُ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ لاَ يُشْرِكُ بِاللهِ شَيْئًا إِلاَّ رَجُلاً كَانَتْ بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ أَخِيهِ شَحْنَاءُ، فَيُقَالُ: أَنْظِرُوا هَذَيْنِ حَتَّى يَصْطَلِحَا، أَنْظِرُوا هَذَيْنِ حَتَّى يَصْطَلِحَا، أَنْظِرُوا هَذَيْنِ حَتَّى يَصْطَلِحَا

Meaning:

"The doors of Paradise are opened on Monday and Thursday. Then every servant who does not associate partners with Allah in any way is forgiven, except for a man between whom and his brother there is enmity(HR. Muslim)

إن في الجنة بابًا يقال له: الريان، يدخل منه الصائمون يوم القيامة لا يدخل منه أحد غيرهم. يقال: أين الصائمون؟ فيقومون لا يدخل منه أحد غيرهم، فإذا دخلوا أغلق فلم يدخل منه أحد

Meaning:

"Indeed in Paradise there is a gate called "Ar-Rayyan," which will be entered by those who often fast (HR Bukhori and Muslim)

Monday and Thursday are days when people's deeds are raised up and examined before Allah SWT.

From Abu Harrairah ra, that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, said:

تُعْرَضُ أَعْمَالُ النَّاسِ فِي كُلِّ جُمُعَةٍ مَرَّتَيْنِ يَوْمَ اْلاثْنَيْنِ وَيَوْمَ الْخَمِيسِ فَيُغْفَرُ لِكُلِّ عَبْدٍ مُؤْمِنٍ إِلاَّ عَبْدًا بَيْنَهُ وَبَيْنَ أَخِيهِ شَحْنَاءُ

Meaning:

"People's deeds are examined before Allah every week (Jumu'ah) twice, namely on Monday and Thursday. Then every servant is forgiven(HR. Muslim)

Thursday is the day when most of the journeys (safar) of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, took place.

Ka'ab bin Malik Radhiyallahu anhu once said:

لَقَلَّمَا كَانَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَخْرُجُ إِذَا خَرَجَ فِي سَفَرٍ إِلاَّ يَوْمَ الْخَمِيْسِ

Meaning "It was very rare for the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, to go out (to travel) except on Thursday." (HR. Al-Bukhari)

Ka'ab bin Malik Radhiyallahu anhu also once said:

أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ يَوْمَ الْخَمِيْسِ فِي غَزْوَةِ تَبُوْكَ وَكَانَ يُحِبُّ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ يَوْمَ الْخَمِيْسِ

Meaning "That the Prophet, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, went out on Thursday for the Battle of Tabuk, and he indeed loved to go out (to travel) on Thursday." (HR. Al-Bukhari)

Monday is the day when the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, was born and received revelations from Allah SWT.

History has recorded that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, was born on Monday the 12th of Rabi'ul Awal in the Year of the Elephant.

عَنْ اَبِيْ قَتَادَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ اَنَّ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ صَلّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ سُئِلَ عَنْ صَوْمِ يَوْمِ اْلِاثْنَيْنِ ؟ فَقاَلَ ذَلِكَ يَوْمٌ وُلِدْتُ فِيْهِ وَيَوْمٌ بُعِثْتُ اَوْ اٌنْزلَ عَلَيَّ فِيْهِ

Meaning:

"From Abu Qotadah r.a, indeed the Messenger of Allah SAW was asked about fasting on Monday. Then he answered: "Monday is the day (HR. Muslim)
