Complete Guide to Purification (Taharah)

Taharah linguistically means cleanliness or purity from filth such as urine and other impurities, or metaphorically cleanliness from faults and sins. According to Islamic law, taharah is cleanliness from major and minor impurities.

Purification in Islamic teaching is made a condition for the validity of worship, such as prayer, circumambulation, and so on. Even mankind from birth until death cannot escape the matter of purity.

Therefore, scholars have agreed that purification is an obligation. Thus, Allah greatly loves those who purify themselves, as mentioned in the following verse:

Indeed, Allah loves those who repent and loves those who purify themselves (Surah al-Baqarah 2:222)

In a hadith, it is also explained:

'Purity is part of faith.' Reported by Muslim (The Excellence of Ablution: 556)

Generally, the scope of taharah has two aspects: removing filth (istinja) and removing minor impurity. Each scope will be elaborated further.
