This article explains the time, number of rak'ahs, virtues, and procedure for performing the optional Dhuha salah along with its niyyah and supplication.
The Dhuha Salah: Virtues and How to Perform It
An optional salah performed when the sun has risen and then ascended approximately halfway until the sun becomes somewhat high and warm (approximately 07:00–11:00). The number of rak'ahs is two or more, with a maximum of eight rak'ahs.
For two rak'ahs, it is based on the hadith of Abu Hurayrah:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) urged me to do three things: fast for three days each month, perform two rak'ahs of dhuha, and to perform Witr before sleep. Reported by al-Bukhari (al-Saum: 1845) and Muslim (Salah al-Musafirin wa Qashruha: 1182)
For four rak'ahs, it is based on the hadith from Mu'adhah:
She asked 'Aishah: "How many rak'ahs did the Prophet Muhammad perform for the Dhuha salah?" She replied: "Four rak'ahs, and sometimes he would add more as he wished." Reported by Muslim (Salah al-Musafirin wa Qashruha: 1175)
For eight rak'ahs, it is based on the hadith from Umm Hani, daughter of Abu Talib:
The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) performed the Dhuha salah with eight rak'ahs, giving the salutation after every two rak'ahs, on the day of the conquest of Makkah. Reported by Abu Dawud (al-Salah: 1098) and Ibn Majah: 1313.
Its virtue or benefit is what is narrated by Muslim, Abu Dawud, and Ahmad from Abu Dharr, that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said,
Each of you should give in charity for every joint of your body each day. Every glorification of Allah is charity, every praise of Allah is charity, every magnification of Allah is charity, every declaration of the oneness of Allah is charity, commanding good is charity, forbidding evil is charity. And as compensation for all of this, two rak'ahs of the dhuha salah are sufficient.
It is performed in sets of two rak'ahs in the Dhuha salah ending with the salutation. The niyyah and supplication are recited in the heart simultaneously at the moment of takbir al-ihram; the niyyah is as follows:
اُصَلِّى سُنَّةَ الضُّحَى رَكْعَتَيْنِ ِللهِ تَعَالَى
Ushollii sunnatadh dhuhaa rok'ataini lillaahi ta'aalaa
I intend to pray the optional Dhuha salah with two rak'ahs for Allah, the Most High
After making the niyyahand the dhuha salah supplication, the procedure continues like an obligatory two-rak'ah salah with the salutation. For the first rak'ah, it is better to recite the dhuha salah supplication which is Surah al-Shams, and for the second rak'ah, the dhuha salah supplication which is Surah al-Layl should be recited.
After that, for subsequent rak'ahs, perform them in the same way above repeatedly up to 8 rak'ahs.
Of course, after learning the procedure, the niyyah for the Dhuha salah and its virtues, it is best not to forget to make supplication after performing it, for with this dhuha salah supplication, your dhuha salah will be answered by Allah.
اَللّهُمَّ اِنَّ الضُّحَاءَ ضُحَاءُكَ وَالْبَهَاءَ بَهَائُكَ وَالْجَمَالَ جَمَالُكَ وَالْقُوَّةَ قُوَّتُكَ وَالْقُدْرَةَ قُدْرَتُكَ وَالْعِصْمَةَ عِصْمَتُكَ اَللّهُمَّ اِنْ كَانَ رِزْقِى فِى السَّمَاءِ فَاَنْزِلْهُ وَاِنْ كَانَ فِى اْلاَرْضِ فَاَخْرِجْهُ وَاِنْ كَانَ مُعَسِّرًا فَيَسِّرْهُ وَاِنْ كَانَ حَرَامًا فَطَهِّرْهُ وَاِنْ كَانَ بَعِيْدًا فَقَرِّبْهُ بِحَقِّ ضُحَائِكَ وَبَهَائِكَ وَجَمَالِكَ وَقُوَّتِكَ وَقُدْرَتِكَ اَتِنِى مَااَتَيْتَ عِبَادَكَ الصَّالِحِيْنَ
Alloohumma innadh-dhuhaa dhuhaa-uka wal bahaa-a bahaa-uka wal jamaala jamaaluka wal qwwata quwwatuka wal qudrota qudrotuka wal 'ishmata 'ishmatuka. Alloohumma ingkaana rizkii fissamaa-i fa-anzilhu wa-ingkaana fil ardhi fa-akhrijhu, wa ingkaana mu'assaron fayassirhu wa ingkaana harooman fathohhirhu wa ingkaana ba'iidan faqorribh, bihaqqi dhuhaa-ika wa bahaa-ika wajamaalika waquwwatika waqudrotika, aatinii maa aataita 'ibaadakash shoolihiin.
O my Lord, verily the morning is Your morning, the glory is Your glory, the beauty is Your beauty, the strength is Your strength, the power is Your power, the protection is Your protection. O my Lord, if my provision is in the heaven then bring it down, and if it is on the earth then bring it forth, and if it is difficult then ease it, and if it is unlawful then purify it, and if it is far then bring it near with the truth of Your morning, Your glory, Your beauty, Your strength, and Your power; grant me what You granted to Your righteous servants.
